Because of a few unpleasant experiences with Indians that some non-Indians have had, the rumors or myth that Indians smell bad have circulated, and unfortunately, what goes in the mind often controls the smell that goes into the nose as well.
Indians Do Not Smell Any Worse than Anyone Else
The truth is that Indians do not smell any worse than anyone else in any other culture. We’ve all come across people who smell bad, but it has nothing to do with their culture. Instead, it has to do with their hygiene habits, their living conditions, the foods that they eat, or the chemistry makeup in their body. It may also have to do with an addiction.
To say that all Indians smell bad is much the same as saying that all Muslims must be terrorists. If you were to believe that, then you must also be forced to believe that if you come across a white person who doesn’t pay their bills, then all white people do not pay their bills. To think that all Indians smell bad is prejudicial thought, at best.
Why Some People Think Indians Smell Bad
Some Indians smell bad – just as people from other cultures smell different – due to their diets. Indian food contains a great deal of curry, and this causes a distinct odor that some people do not care for. The same could be said of cultures that eat a lot of garlic, such as Italians. Foods such as this can cause the skin to have the smell of the food that is consumed.
Indians also have different sweat glands than people whose ancestors do not come from desert country. Just as Alaskan Indians sweat less, because of their cold heritage, Indians that originate from desert areas sweat more. Also, in terms of Indians who are still in their originating countries, it is important to note that many areas of those countries are not fully developed to provide for adequate hygiene. This is also true for parts of Alaska.
What Indians Can Do To Quell This Myth
Unfortunately, actions speak louder than words in our world, but only in some cases. For example, if you have a closed mind, you might think that all Indians smell bad without having ever experienced a smelly Indian yourself. In this case, the words are louder than the action. You need to reverse this train of thought if you are an Indian, but in the long run, you really can’t do much about what prejudiced people are going to think or say.

Dark skinned indians from india indeed smell bad. This is not a prejudice but a fact. Singaporean indians and northern indians do not smell. Come to Singapore and smell for yourself the different types of indians.

I think those indian foreign workers smell because they do not have proper place to bath and keep their hygene..the chinese apparently has the worst bad breath as compared to any other race in the world. This is probably because of their bad hygene as well or due to the food type or genes. The question now to ask is which smell is worst to live with..Not to mention, everyone on this earth be it boy or girl is carrying a walking smelly bomb 24hrs with them wherever they go..their faeces. Just make sure its not let out. So, external smells isn’t that bad I think after all compared to internal smell.

I live in a school filled with indians and asaians… i am an asian. I agree with the fact that most indians do not smell bad. But there is some truth that indians so smell bad if you search on google “why do white or black people smell bad” u wont find anything but for indian yes. It may be impart to their diet “you are what you eat.” Some indians smell like BO all the time and some smell like normal(nothing). Also i do not agree with the fact that alaska is not well devoleped in area where native americans live. Most native americans live in big cities in alaska like anchorage.

You could solve the “steriotype” by telling more indians to discover a neat invention called deodorant. I have a new Indian colleague who joined yesterday and is sitting just in front of me with a partition between us. Oh mine, the smell is so intoxicating. Our air-conditioned office is quite cold and I could see perspiration droplets on his balding head, even though he had settled down for at least half an hour. I no longer enjoy the fresh air I used to have. I don’t know how long I can last. My other colleagues have suggested getting a air purifier, a fan (blowing at his direction) etc. I don’t want to be perceived as unfriendly but why can’t people be sensitive to others and take measures to minimise that BO? I feel like puking and fainting

Over the past 20 years, many wealthy Indians and Pakistanis have been moving to specific communities in Canada including my neighborhood, a lake-front community and one of the most affluent areas in our city. Today my neighborhood is now predominantly Indian and Pakistani.
It is not just the people that smell, but their homes and garbage smell bad as well. We can often smell these cultures from over a block away and I believe there are two reasons for this.
1 – These cultures frequently eat significant amounts of curry and a few other spices that we do not, including cardmon and corriander. Note, they truly don’t believe that they smell, because their odor is emanating from their pores so they cannot smell it on themselves or others (from similar cultures)
2- These cultures have significantly less water in their countries so do not shower or bath as frequently or as thoroughly as we would.

I have Indian friends in the US that do not smell at all. As I am writing this, I am in south India and there are many (not all) Indians who have an odor. I think that in general, poorer countries are less educated about hygiene. I also noticed that my driver has been wearing the same outfit for a week. It just gets dirtier. So the smell may be coming from food,bad bathing habits And dirty clothes as well. Please don’t generalize. The more educated Indians do not smell at all.

If a caucasian or chinese were to eat the same food, they’d smell as well. So it has nothing to do with being racist. IT IS THE TRUTH. It does smell so stop dismissing it as racist comments. I don’t expect you to change your diet, but at least be conscious of what your body emits because of what you eat and put on some deodorant / take more frequent baths.
I recently had a chinese guest over, and he was very aware of the fact that he did have bad body odour – beacuase he was overweight and sweated profusely, so he took 3 baths a day, so even non-indians do smell. But he didn’t dismiss it as being racist / profiling and took some corrective action – SO PLEASE STOP SAYING EVERYONE ELSE IS RACIST.
This is a dietary issue, not a racist thing, so do something about it – just use deodorant or take more frequent baths.

im an indian in an international school. Ive got loads of european and american friends and there are a few indians in my class. my canadian friend was telling me how i didnt smell at all compared to another indian who did. when I compare us both (me and the other indian), i know the other indian does not shower as much as i do, very frequently visits temples and sweats profusely. Unlike him, I do use deo. However we both eat currry atleast once a day, so I doubt its the diet and I feel that only adds to mouth odor which I must say is universal and not restricted solely to the indian race. I visited India last month and did find that a ghastly odor does emminate from certain individuals who come from lower income groups. well thats just tough, they dont have the resources that we do, so we have to adapt and learn to live with each other.

I am a white American working in a sushi/thai bistro. We have numerous items and ethnic foods to choose from, but they all get curry. They all seem to be named Patel as well. And they are rude. Especially the women. Arrogant. They are quick to call any American rude and ignorant (you can tell who is Indian in the comments above by looking for these two words) while their own disrespect for those around them. Indians are also some of the worst tippers in the industry. Not just the FOB ones either. I’m talking 2nd and 3rd generation. Maybe my experience is an anomaly, but the point is you are what you eat. Fat people smell like greasy food. If you eat fast food every day, then you will start to sweat french fries. If you eat curry, you will eventually smell like the ass of a dead cow.

I am originally an Indian and no one has walked away from me or made any faces also I do not sweat. In fact, I do not like anyone bending over me while talking or touching me casually, I feel they may pass some bacteria as I believe not all communities shower in the morning like we do before stepping out. In India, bathing every morning is a ritual. No one steps out without bathing. Most of people who come outside India are from well to do families and not the poverty struck India which is shown in western Media. Having said this, I agree about an unbearable odour of smell as there was a tradition before to apply oil in the hair to keep it dark. The computer labs have lot of south Indian majority for whom currie is in there daily diet with rice and they do apply oil to their hair which may make the odour strong and unbearable. But normally the Indian(Hindu) culture teaches them to be clean and bathe daily in the morning and evening. You can simply tell the people that they do not smell good and I can tell you they will follow your advice 100% as most of the Indians would not like their fellow American friends to feel disgusted about them and take care to use deo or avoid putting oil on their hair. Try. Our food has lot of anti cancerous, anti bacterous spices those are strong like turmeric, cumin, garlic, onion etc and that may be the reason. India is a country of 1 plus billion people. Overly crowded and lot of humidity due to which people sweat and so the smell. I understand the concerns you as I had the same when someone applied oil to their hair smelling stong. But instead of saying Indians stink and generalising tell them who are around you that they should take care of the odour and your problem would be solved atleast for your own good.

Not all Indians smell bad, but many who are not raised outside of India do smell offensive, and often you can tell if one is standing behind you. It’s a fact, and even Indians who are raised outside of India will admit it.
I’ve gone to school with Indians and have worked with them too. The majority who carry offensive odors are the ones I’ve worked with at my job, who come to the US to work. It’s for the most part those who prefer not to assimilate.
Those who I have gone to school with generally did not smell. The biggest factor is due to personal hygiene. The US born Indians generally do not smell, and that is because they know of the hygiene norms of the US.
Those who are not born or raised in the US but have gone to school here and have non-Indian friends have learned of the hygiene norms from others here.
It is a hygiene issue, and the reason we notice it more among Indians is because of the food they eat.
I have lots of Indian friends (both Hindu and non-Hindu), and they have told me that many Indians in India do not shower on a daily basis. It is normal in India, and it is not an issue in there because the odor becomes common and not something that they would notice.
That would probably not be a major issue outside of India, except for their diet which causes the odors that do emanate from their skin to become noticeable to non-Indians who are not accustomed to the smell.
People of any culture who rarely turn on the exhaust fans in their kitchens when cooking will get food odors on them, and the smells are actually pleasant when the food is being prepared. It’s just that afterwards, if you do not change your clothes or shower, you will smell like the food and not so pleasant after a day.
It’s not just Indians that don’t shower or bathe on a daily basis either. We just don’t realize odors from most other cultures if they go 1 or 2 days without showering because they can cover up BO with deodorants. Many of the Indians who do not assimilate well with other cultures do not like to use deodorants. (You can’t hold it against them either because for some they feel they are more pure and religious without putting chemicals on their bodies).
I have learned from my non-Hindu (Christian) Indian friends that they dislike the foods that the Hindu sub-cultures consume. I have noticed also that the non-Hindu friends never seem to have the BO, even those who are not well assimilated.
One of my very close friends is a Hindu Indian who was raised in the US, and it took him years to tell me straight out that he agrees that many Indians smell and he told me that if I ever were to go to India, that I may get sick initially because the odors are very strong in the streets.
I know this was long, but I saw some racist comments above and it seems like the author just did not want to offend anyone. Neither side gave a fair explanation, and I don’t think you offend anyone when you tell the facts followed by the details.

I worked with two indians in North America. One, smelled bad -like a weird sweat that I am 100% sure it’s because:
1) He doesn’t use an antiperspirant (deodorants don’t work; they need an antipersp)
2) He doesn’t wash his shirt even though it smells
3) He eats spicy rice food everyday
The other one, had an “indian” smell, but it wasn’t a bad smell… it was like a herb or something.
Anyway, I agree that most indians really NEED an antiperspirant.

My ancestors are from India and Pakistan.
I’m honest enough to admit that most people from India do smell really bad. It’s a combination of things. The diet, the lack of showering, and the lack of deodorant use. I myself try to limit my intake of Indian type foods to 2 or 3 meals a week at most. Once I move out of my parents house, I will rarely eat Indian type food.
I will refuse to have anyone cook Indian type food in my future house. The truth though is that Americans smell like corn, but since you can’t smell yourself, you can’t tell. There was a scientist on some documentary series called “Fat in America” that said that the Average American has 74% corn based carbon in their body.
It’s just that we eat so much corn(in the form of high fructose corn syrup, corn flakes, doritos, tacos, etc, etc) that we can’t even smell it anymore.
If an American were to go to a country where they have almost no corn in their diet, people there would say that Americans smell like corn.
In other words, it’s true that Indians smell, but other people smell too, it’s just that you’re desensatised to that smell because you’re so used to it.
In other words, odor is in the nose of the beholder.

I’m an Indian living in the US. I stumbled on this site because I googled “Indians smell”. And do you know why I decided to do that. I’ve often found white people rubbing their noses from like 20 feet away and always when you just happen to make eye contact with them. I do not have any body odour issues. It was very obvious that these people are DELIBERATELY trying to send a msg “You stink”. This means you’re being pre-judged, regardless of whether you smell or not. I’ve seen this happen countless times. But I live in WV. So it’s probable that racism is playing its part.
Now let me get to the “CURRY” nonsense. Firstly, a curry is the equivalent of what a western stew or gravy is. One’s mans food is another man’s poison. Some curries have a distinct odor. Others, not, or differently. Some are universally pleasant, some not. Many people look down on “curry”. Likewise, many indians look down on what you consider food. They consider it bland, tasteless and having no aroma or flavor whatsoever. As you can see, this is also a stereotype and it’s not entirely true. But it is the truth to many. They could say 80% of western food is tasteless. How’d you like that ? Saying you don’t care is like saying we don’t care either.
Dave – I liked what you wrote. It seemed very balanced. I had a south indian room mate who would bathe regularly. Being a brahmin (priestly upper caste), they HAD to bath before they prayed. EVERY morning. But, he would REFUSE to use a deo/anti-persp. And, he would put coconut oil on his head. He would wash his hair every WEEK. He did not have a body odour. But his head used to stink. We had some indians come over from India for 3 months on a project. They ALL used deo sprays (some contain anti-persp ingredients) in front of him. I was thrilled hoping he would notice and follow suit. But he refused to, saying he did not like tampering with nature. He was an extreme.
Bathing – This is just total BS. Indian People do not bathe regularly ? Are you shitting me ? I don’t know about Singapore and the indians there. There are 2 types of indians regardless of where they are – those who will dress with the same (sometimes worn-out) clothes they purchased from india, prob not use deos and can be spotted out from their appearance. They are likely the smelly ones as far as BO goes. Most Indians eat curried foods. Their houses will smell of the odor; this is 100% true. While the food is being prepared, the smell is actually tantalizing and very aromatic. The aroma turns smelly after a few hrs. If you’re smelling curry, it is from their clothes. I had an indian co-worker lend me his Dish TV-remote. I’m an Indian, remember. His remote was literally stinking of the after-curry smell. The unpleasant smell. Not the pleasant one when its prepared. Even something else that he gave me had the same strong smell. He does not smell of that odor and neither do his clothes.
What you Americans, Canadians and other whites should be doing is to stop propagating this. Learn to differentiate between situations and stop reacting to people without just cause. Just because they are Indians. Most white people in WV have not reacted like I described above. But MANY MANY people have done this. And made it very obvious that it was racist. It may even be a sub-conscious reaction to seeing an Indian without smelling him. But they reacted nevertheless.

Italians use garlic. Sauteing garlic actually has a very enticing aroma. Only raw garlic is offensive. Many indians are vegetarians. Garlic is used a lot in indian recipes too; the non-veg kind. Even the indians who are non-veg; 95% of the time; they will prepare veg food AT HOME. Without garlic as it is not used in veg preparation. Whoever tried to draw a parallel there had a baseless point.
I forgot to add to my above post; I also have seen many many times that people will spit when you happen to make eye contact; from even 40 feet away. Or when they pass by you outdoors. This has nothing to do with BO and has more to do with racism. Again, I don’t believe I’ve seen this outside of WV, USA. And never in a few countries in Europe that I worked/stayed in. And I’m a westernized well groomed good looking, well spoken, well-respected among peers Indian guy. And yet I see this BS with presciption-like regularity in WV. And this is not even in the remote areas, mind you. In the most progressive part of the state.
I think the smell is being associated with the smell that comes from HOMES of indians. And some of the dishes do have a strong curry odour. A few days ago, we were passing by and could get the curry smell of an indian lunch box from about 15-25 feet away. To me, it was not unpleasant. To a foreigner, it’s an unknown, therefore unpleasant. Smell and taste are connected. Taste that dish; if you do not like it, you wont like the smell/aroma either.
The answer to other fellow indians :
- Wash your damn hair if you put coconut oil
- Air out your homes so the smell does not linger on clothes
- Ignore the idiots who pre-judge. Listen to the genuine ones/cases and take steps to address them, if valid.
I’ve yet to meet an Indian in the US who smelt of (armpit/sweat) BO. And I find it ridiculous that curry smell emanates from the pores unless you guys are putting a shitload of spices in your food. Even so, garlic & onions are known for doing this. But I have yet to encounter this from the pores of people. Most of it is pyschological. People will look at you, then fit you into a stereotype and imagine a smell. A PLACEBO effect or the effect of self-suggestion.
If you blindfolded these people and had people of different races walk by them, I guarantee they would not be able to tell them apart (assuming their clothes did not smell).
There is one thing I will concede to. I’ve noticed indians have a breath odor more than people of some races. That most likely is poor oral hygiene. If you’ve consumed certain foods and do not brush/wash it down with adequate water, you’re asking for it.

The whole “food” explanation is B.S. I’ve met lots of Indian people that eat really strong Indian food, and they don’t smell at all. I think the reason why a lot of the Indian people smell is because they don’t shower. It’s not what they eat; I know what fresh Indian food smells like–and it smells good! Not like rotten whatever the hell it is. I know this because I live in a city with a lot of Indian people.

I work at an Indian restaurant that would obviously get a lot of Indian clientele. The reason that some Indians smell bad is simply because of bad hygiene. It’s not the food and it’s not the people in general. The ones that smell are not Westernized and don’t use deodorant or anything. It’s definitely not the food. I know plenty of people that eat curry every day and do not smell. But some of these people eat clumps of rice and other food with their hands, no silverware at all, while they didn’t shower or use deodorant that day.

The Indians in my country like to apply coconut oil to their hair and body. In a hot climate, the oil will react with bacteria and emit odours that are not pleasant to other ethnic groups.

Dude….it’s really simple. The smell is from 2 sources – eating lots of Indian food can cause your body odor to smell differently due to the spices. But I think that is actually very, very minor. It is mainly because if you cook Indian food in the home, the odor gets into everything – it is strong and very long-lasting. Gets into the carpet, gets into the walls, gets into the clothing, the hair – YES. It causes a strong smell that Indians themselves may not notice if they are used to it. And I’m not being racist, I am Indian – my home smelled like this growing up, and I myself can’t stand the smell, whereas I know other Indians who are not bothered at all. I have met Italians who have a certain smell (different) if there is a lot of cooking in their homes with their own spices. Btw, the smell is not from coconut oil in the hair. The smell from coconut oil is faint and not what most anyone would call offensive – and it is definitely not the smell that everyone here is thinking of. Indian cooking was not designed with the Western/modern home in mind. Think of how it is done in India – in traditional homes, with lots of open windows letting air blow through, and the kitchen may not even located in the house, but in a separate area outside of the house. No carpets. Windows not closed up most of the time. You get the picture.
For the person who seems disgusted by Indians eating with their hands – hello, duh. Utensils you know of are European. Indian food was meant to be eaten with the hands. I went to an Indian restaurant with some Brits and they were all embarassed that I ate my nan and curry with my hands. It makes much more sense than trying to do it with a fork and knife? Flip the tables – we care so much about proper European etiquette and table manners in a European restaurant, why not care about the Asian way to do things in an Asian restaurant?

I surmise that the reason Indians I’ve met to date that smelled so bad was because they were so egotistical. Even if just sitting in an air-conditioned conference room or table at an air-conditioned restaurant, or leisurely walking through a wide-open plant, it seems they sweat and stink, the purpose of which is not thermal regulation but an attempt to spread their ego past the boundary layer of their skin and clothes and into the air as far as inhumanly possible, to remind everyone else afterwards that an Indian had been there the day before. In terms of previous encounters with foul odours, I’ve been through factories that digest wood pulp to make paper, machine shops whose spray coolants were heavily contaminated with tramp vegetable-based lubricating oil, and even plants that processed carcasses into dog food. And I thought I had smelled the worst on earth. Until I caught a whiff of an Indian, more so, a group of Indians direct from India, suit-and-tie engineering professionals no less, AND had to host them for dinner, which of course they wanted to have at an Indian restaurant. MY GOD!!! How can anyone or anything smell THAT bad and not be dead and decomposing? Their BO which had assaulted me non-stop throughout the day then made my eyes water throughout the interminable evening, which I excused as both a fictitious allergy and light-sensitivity problem, so while indoors I could pull a pair of sunglasses from my purse to put some sort of physical barrier between them, that horridness which emanated from them, and my eyes. Words fail to describe the utter helplessness I felt at being in a restaurant while on the constant verge of wretching. They obviously used western deodorants and/or colognes but it seemed that only enraged their natural Indian stink, as stimulated to begin with by the smell of curry. It was like smelling what I suppose the ultimate battle between good and evil would smell like, with evil having the upper hand. And their conduct to the restaurant staff and proprietor, who where Indian as well, was embarrasingly rude, demanding, and demeaning. In hindsight, it seemed the Indian staff at the restaurant knew immediately they would be in for a rough go when we first walked in, by virtue of the look on their faces, as in “Oh God, unwesternized Indians, straight from India.” At least for their travail I left double the normal and customary tip, and thanked the proprietor profusely for a ‘wonderful’ evening, though I thought it best for me never to venture back again by myself, to possibly be remembered as the one who brought ‘them’ in with her. So I do think it is not just a physical thing. A wood pulp digester smells most foul, but after twenty minutes or so of being around one, the sense of foulness seems to abate. And people can and do work in that environment all week. Never once during my excruciating twelve hours of being around those Indian engineers did their BO seem to abate; it was a constant olfactory assault. I can understand how cultural differences can influence what one considers to be a foul odour, but have any Indians encountered a Canadian so malodorous that afterwards they considered burning the outfit they were wearing at the time, even after dry-cleaning, and shaving off all the hair on their head?

I am an indian, AND I SMELL HORRIBLE. I make sure to spread disgusting spices on my clothes and body b4 i got to skool. Also, I am hideous. I am short (5’2”) and i am a full grown male. i <3 computers. And i rly rly rly want to become a doctor, but i failed all my courses at cape cod community. I am a middle class indian and i use perfumes as well , but though the smell which you are talking persists in lower class peoplem since they work a lot(physically) sweat a lot too and then unable to have food , clothing shelter properly

Why is this a so-called “myth.” I have walked into several stores owned by people of Indian decent and they ALWAYS without a doubt smell like body odor! It is no myth! I just recently went to see a new doctor who’s Indian. I started gagging when I walked in the door because it smelled like BO so badly!! You can’t tell me it’s because they are poor or they work a lot. These were doctors and nurses that smelled!! It’s no myth!! And, it’s not a “couple” either. It’s every indian I’ve ever had the displeasure to run into!

im a malaysian indian studying in the States, its very unfortunate that most indians i know do smell bad n they are all from india. They not only smell bad but are also dirty, lazy, cheap, liars, cheaters, nosey, n the most desperate SOBs. Things got so bad that i had to kick em out the apartment n now i promised myself not to mingle with none of these indians. They should be ashamed of themselves. I am an Indian and live in a very small town in India. There are lot of American whom i admire like Mother Teressa,Annie Besant…etc. These people came to India and helped poor people. There are few American family who comes and stay here for few months every year for doing missionary work.I appreciate what they do here to help poor and i help them with few things.these people never complained Indian smell bad rather they love it here and even told me they want to get permanently settled here.
Reading all comments on internet is heart breaking, it feels like i have always been wrong about Americans.

Indians, at least the ones who work in my company simply do smell bad. The ones from south India smell fine, because of their diet, but the other ones, my goodness.
I know in my department, HR has had to talk to several of my Indian colleagues because of their strong smell. I am used to it, so it does not bother me very much, but at first, it would literally make my eyes water.

I had to leave class today because the Indian guy next to me reaked so bad I couldn’t breathe. The guy smelt like he didn’t shower in a couple of days. If Indian food is likely to make people smell bad, they should pay strict attention to their hygiene. The IT manager in my old company smelt like roses despite being Indian!

It sounds really racist, i know.. I would not like it if i hear something like that about my country. But it is definetly true, if i see an indian in the gym, i prefer not to get in, or even in elevators. I’ve met a few Indians in class who do not smell, and some who do smell very strongly. To me, it smells close to aged pissed that has dried on cloth. My friends tell me it’s the curry.
It’s hard to say something is a stereotype when you can go out in real life, get within two feet of a random Indian person, and verify for yourself whether it is true.
Today, I thought about typing into the search, “why do indian people smell” out of curiousity, because I walked within 3 feet of an Indian family, and the smell got me thinking, “Why do so many indians smell like this?”
Their scent is very familiar. If you blind-folded me, and ask me to figure out who was indian based solely on smell, I would be able to figure it out, assuming it was one of those indians which had a smell. If the indian, didn’t have a smell, then I wouldn’t be able to tell.
In contrast, I haven’t met many Americans who smell, assuming they take bath’s regularly, or Chinese, Japanese, or Koreans. As to Europeans, the few that I do meet, don’t seem to smell either.
On most Asians, when they do smell, it is usually because of “moth balls” on their clothing, or “scented medicine oils”. Those items are within their control.

Instead of debating this: why don’t someone do a real scientific study and gather live statistics.
Everyone get close to an Indian person, sniff, and do a live count of how many indians you smelled, whether they smelled, how strong, and what each smell like. Then look for a pattern.
Talk to them, and find out what they do for a living, which part they came from, and what they tend to eat daily. (PS. You can’t ask people how often they take a bath. That would be offensive.) Jot this down, and correspond them to the above data and see if a pattern can be formulated.
No one in the test study has to know what you are doing.
Then come back and publish the results here.

Oh, and yes, most of the Indians I have come across do smell pretty awful. I believe that their diet is partly responsible but then again in general, Asians are fairly unhygienic by most people’s standards, so the result is inevitable.

I can’t believe how many racists (both Indians and non-Indians) we have here. Instead of contributing to the discussion, you just incite childish arguments.
As an Asian from a tropical country, I attest to the fact that we are more hygienic than average. By habit we bathe everyday, and we continue to do so even when we move to a different climate. We also wash our asses with soap and water, and our hands afterwards, after taking a dump. Personally, it is so disgusting to be forced to just use TP in the office. It feels so backwards. I moved to America about 5 years ago, and 2 things really surprised me: a) TP is used to WIPE the ass, instead of using soap and water to CLEAN it, and b) there is prevalent use of incandescent lighting at home. Point a is more bothersome, since you realize that practically everyone around you is walking with shit still on their ass. Point b is easier to accept, but it is just so wasteful of electricity. Back home, only the poor people use incandescents a lot since they don’t know better and that’s what they can afford.
Back to the topic however, I’ve met so many Indians in my field of work (16 years in IT), and the reason this generalization that Indians smell bad is made is because of the large percentage of those that really do have an awful stench. I mean, in my job we have other races too including Mexicans, Italians, Romanians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Serbians, Filipinos, Chinese, etc. They don’t smell different to me. But with all of the Indians I’ve worked with except for 2 (1 guy and 1 girl), they have this really bad body odor around them with varying degrees of stench. I don’t think it’s the food. Most probably it’s because they don’t use deodorants.
So to all the Indians, please take whatever is constructive in these comments and ignore all the bigotry. Most people just hate the smell, not your people. We know anyone can have a bad body odor. It’s just that you have a large percentage of those that do compared to others.

This is ridiculous. I have been around several Indian individuals who have smelled quite unpleasantly, but have met many MORE Indian individuals who have smelled just fine. 1) If it is a bathing or clothes washing problem, anyone would have an unpleasant odor if they do not cleanse frequently enough. 2) If it is a food issue, try this trick which I use because I am part Italian & have been informed that I stink when I eat garlic, so I follow up with drinking 1 or 2 cups of peppermint tea after eating the food cause of the offensive odor. 3) If the odor has to do with different cleansing or perfume products, please note that not everyone cares for the odor of different products and that in the American culture, certain odors smell “clean and fresh” and others do not. For instance, I do not like the odor of sandalwood at all, it actually smells “unclean & dirty” to my nose, but it is an actual legitimate perfume scent. I simply just do not like it at all. On the other hand, I wear rose perfume & have been informed that my perfume can cause asthma issues which might be very unpleasant to someone else’s nose. 4) The odor could also be a side effect from a medicine which cannot be avoided.
Look if it is an issue that can be easily resolved, please note that when it comes to body odors, in American culture, we adults do not walk up to someone (usually) and ask when they last bathed. (It would be an insult from an adult, and an innocent question from a child). In our culture, if there is an unpleasant odor emanating from a person, regardless of the root cause or that person’s race, it is almost ALWAYS presumed to be a lack of cleanliness issue. Perhaps we are not as broad-minded as we could be in this area. But please respect our own limitations and “when in Rome, do as the Romans do”, so to speak. It is NOT AN INDIAN thing specifically. I would probably smell stinky to Indians if I visited India because I do not like “Indian” perfumes and prefer my pepperminty breathe, ivory soap, and rose perfume – get the point?

I think the overall original question alone had a good purpose if it helps open everyone’s eyes just a little, but that is all. If Indian people’s hair smells it is because they use “ghee” (clarified butter) on it to set it, when they are in India. Anyone who doesn’t wash, or smears weird things on their body, will smell bad. People reflect hygiene standards and their surroundings. I work with foriegn tourists in London, and every nation has a particular smell due to lifestyle habits, so the best thing is to wash properly. Arab women smell of urine and rotten fish, French people smell of overpowering perfume and cigarettes, Germans smell strongly of fresh sweat, Italians stink of garlic and aftershave lotion, Japanese smell of something very sickly sweet and synthetic (don’t know what) and Americans smell of stale meat and grease. I don’t know what the Brits smell of, because I am one – (beer and farts, probably.) So your best bet, wherever you are, is to keep clean, shower twice a day and other than that, accept that you are likely to offend someone.

i met a lot of representatives of Indian country and their culture. 95% of them stink. One was my roommate… monkey-level hygiene… shower once a week… the whole floor smelled disgusting at our school when he was there. I could tell if he was at school or not by the smell. When teachers told him that he smells, no improvements happened. Maybe they don’t smell it, got used to it, i wonder.
One more reason maybe is that their parents marry them by arrangements on a person who is richer and whiter. So they don’t care if they look good and smell nice for the purpose of getting girls cuz their parents do it for them.

My sister had a roommate at UVA that was from India. As their dorm rooms were not air-conditioned, it could get quite hot sometimes, and my sister complained that her roommate often had a strong “sweat” odor even though she showered regularly.
It got to be pretty bad, so we encouraged my sister to have a tactful talk with her. Apparently, the use of deoderant/antiperspirant was simply not part of her culture. My sister bought her some products and after she started using them, all was well.
Please don’t assume that different cultural norms are inferior to your own. I’d bet that American’s “Eau de Cheeseburger” make other people gag, too.

If i take most of the comments here from white people and make a conclusion that all white people are ignorant and self-centered, i am pretty sure i wouldn’t be right. No one, in their right mind, is saying that ALL Indians smell. BUT living in Melbourne Australia where many Indians immigrants and students have made home, I have to say that from my experience they are most definitely the worst group – in terms of the number of encounters I’ve had and the “intensity” of the smell. Many Indians themselves who have detoxed and stopped eating curry and living in a environment where curry is cooked, NOW admit that “Indians smell”. You say they sweat a lot, well I sweat a lot too but I make sure that I don’t stink around other people… how? Washing frequently and using deodorant and perfume! AND I make sure my home doesn’t stink by opening the windows and using an exhaust fan. BUT Indians please don’t cook strong curry and blow it though the window of your neighbours… That’s not nice! Also Indian parents should consider their children who have to go to school and be called names or be “avoided” because of this problem… I really feel sorry for these kids.

i am a filipino i agreed with those indian people its really bad to say that indian people have a bad odor, even not indian have some bad odor, in fact i have a lot of indian friends they ‘re not like that they are clean, smell good, and accomodating, i luv them…

I’ll be honest with you. I’ll beat the shit out of an Indian if they don’t respect my personal space with that terrible smell.
This old ghandi looking man at the gym wants to run on the treadmill next to me smelling like a bag full of smashed armpits. I told him either take a bath or get the fuck out of my face. He wont come anywhere near me now.
Just know this goes out to any of you foul shit smelling bastards. I will throw down over poor hygiene.

As an American I would like to say sorry for the rude and disrespectful Americans. The body smells due to bacteria nothing more or nothing less. I have never used deodorant and never will. I use salt . The skin is an organ and we sweat to cool the body and dispose of toxins , so it goes to reason that said toxins will smell. But the main problem with body order is LACK OF PROPER WASHING nothing more and nothing less. unless one is sweating a lot no need for a shower everyday in facts its bad for the skin anyway , I just wanted to say SORRY for the rude comments coming from people, for the most part Americans are kind consecrate people who mean you or your people no harm. And to be honest we would love to be your friends I for one find most people who smell around me is due to 1.cultural 2 religious 3 just plane poor people . I remember a time in the 70′s where black Americans didn’t smell so nice , you know why?lack of money lol now the times have changed , as more black Americans made more money and better hygiene products were made , now you see beautiful black American women running around with make up and shaved legs and arm pits , the point I am trying to make ,people and cultures change. ANGELA: People didnt smell good until the 80′s due to showers not being a common household item. Baths were common and would be taken 1-3 times a week. the shower has spearheaded the cleanliness issue.
for everyones information, its almost impossible to buy or rent a residence without a shower, there is no excuse for poor hygiene. it not only stinks, but spreads disease

Hi guys,
I’m laughing my ass off over here. I’m neither white nor indian, so I’m gonna be imparcial in this discussion.
First off, I’m in Abu Dhabi, UAE at the moment. I’m going to be staying here for 7 weeks interacting with people from all over the world.
Ever since I got here I met lots of Indians, Arabs, etc. Basicially a lot of people from Middle-east, Asia. To be very straight forward and make things simple, EVERYONE from middle-east has a tendency to smell bad!
These guys in my class from Saudi Arabia smell bed, their hair is greasy.
The cab driver that picked me up at the airport smelled SO awfully bad.. His whole taxi did.
But, some other middle-eastern don’t smell bad, they probably shower more than the others.
It’s just a matter of shower and deo.. Simple like that!

Aside from Indian people not showering on a daily or even weekly basis, they are also not washing their foul- smelling clothing either. So please, people from India, wash your body, shampoo your hair AND above all, wash your smelly clothes too! It is impolite to others when you stink up an airplane and when your children stink up a classroom. The odor is enough to make me want to gag and vomit!

Some Indians; especially those who put coconut oil on their hair and not wash them for days………I remember way before buses were air-conditioned, whenever there was rain, the windows wd be all shut and boy oh boy, if I had sat next to an Indian, I remember feeling nauseated all the time; no exaggeration, maybe they use this to keep bad guys away!

A very poorly written article… Now I’m not trying to be an @$$hole here, but they do have a very peculiar and particular odor. This is not a result of curry, spices or environment. This is genetic. There’s something called pheromones, which may attract or repel certain people. (Remember that each region had very different ancestors.) If you don’t like the odor, you’re most likely not part of the natural selection for that particular person.

What lovely politically correct bullshit, Indians smelling bad is a MYTH and only in people’s HEADS. Right… as someone who catches the train every day with them, who lives this, I can assure you, they very much reek. I do come across a rare Indian who DOESN’T. Instead of worrying about people’s prejudice my advice is to use deodrant and brush their teeth.

It’s not a myth. Many of them don’t shower or wear deodorant, so they end up smelling like BO and dirty diapers. I don’t think it’s the food so much as really poor hygiene.

Okay, seriously? I’m Indian, and all my friends tell me that I definitely DO NOT smell bad. I shower everyday, I wash my clothes, I care about my hygiene as much as anyone else. I agree, there are some Indians who smell bad. But that is SO not genetic or hereditary or whatever. It’s all about PERSONAL hygiene. There are some “white people” who stink like crap, too. How about we stop freakin’ categorizing each other and focus on ourselves? PLEASE.
I’m tired of you guys saying we ALL smell. I smell as NORMAL as the rest of you think you do.

ACTUALLY ITS BECAUSE THEY ARE COOKING WITH HEAVY SPICES, AND IT TAKES DAYS AND HOURS TO GET RID OF THE SMELL, AS MANY OF THEM DO NOT OPEN WINDOWS…THE FACT IS THEY DO SHOWER AND BRUSH THEIR TEETH AND ARE CLEAN, BUT THE COLORING OF THE SKIN DOES HELP AS THEY ARE NOT WHITE OR BLACK? BUT I USED TO LIVE WITH THEM AS I RENTED, AND THEY SMELL BECAUSE OF THEIR FOOD – THEY USE ALOT OF CURRY POWDER, GRAM MASLA (SPELLING)AND OTHER STRONG HOT SPICES. ITS NOT LIKE THEY COOK IT ONCE IN A WHILE, THEY ARE LIVING IN IT EVERYDAY AS THEY DO NOT LIKE ‘WHITE” PEOPLES FOOD AS ONE TOLD ME. SO AGAIN, THIS SMELL GETS INTO THERE CLEAN CLOTHES AND YOU SMELL IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
