These days, there is a magic pill for just about everything. People who are overweight thought that their magic pill for weight loss was Meridia – until it was pulled off of the market by the drug manufacturer. Before you go in search of the next magic pill, you need to know some important things about Meridia.

Taking Meridia Off of the Market
Meridia is made by Abbott Laboratories, and the United States Food and Drug Administration announced that the company voluntarily took the drug off the market recently. This move was prompted by clinical trials that produced evidence that the drug increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
The scariest thing about this particular ‘recall’ is the fact that the FDA approved this drug for human use in 1997 – thirteen years ago. Since that time, millions of people have taken the drug, and currently, eight million people are taking the drug. What this tells you is that just because a medication is approved by the FDA, this is no indication that the drug is actually safe. It only means that the early studies of the medication have not produced dangerous problems.
The Magic Pill Wasn’t Very Potent
Unless you were looking to have a heart attack or stroke, the truth is that Meridia was not that potent when it came to weight loss anyway. People who were taking the drug did lose a little weight, but certainly not enough weight to continue to increase the risks associated with the medication. Unfortunately, other weight loss drugs may have the same risks, as well as others associated with them.
There is No Magic Pill for Weight Loss
If you are looking for an easy way to lose weight, there is really only one easy solution – weight loss surgery. Even this solution isn’t easy, since most doctors who perform these surgeries require you to attend counseling sessions, and to learn how to eat right and exercise after the surgery – before it ever takes place. Also, you must be morbidly obese to qualify for such a surgery.
The most realistic option, if you are not morbidly obese, is to learn to eat healthy and exercise. If healthy eating and exercise does not help you to lose weight, you should visit your doctor to see what underlying health issue is preventing you from losing weight, such as hypothyroidism.
