Are you planning a trip? Do you have travel insurance? Do you have diabetes? There are some things that you should know – especially what to look for in diabetic travel insurance, and you need to do this well in advance of your planned trip.

Why You Need Diabetic Travel Insurance
We get travel insurance for a variety of reasons – even if we don’t have diabetes. But as a diabetic, you have special concerns. You may find that you need emergency supplies should you and the supplies that you bring become separated. You may have a medical emergency related to your diabetes, only to find out that a foreign hospital will not accept your regular health insurance coverage – or that your regular health insurance coverage will not pay for any services administered outside of your state or country.
Learn About the Country You Are Visiting
If you live in a country where healthcare is free or guaranteed by the government, you need to be aware that this is not the case in all countries. The Untied States is an example of this – where everyone is expected to have insurance coverage or to pay for services when they are rendered.
In some countries, your passport may be collected to keep you from leaving the country until your medical bills are settled, should you incur medical bills without having insurance to cover it.
What Your Travel Insurance Should Cover
While your travel insurance should cover the usual things, such as theft of property, it should also cover any delays or cancellations that could be caused by your diabetes. Additionally, it should cover any legal expenses related to those cancellations or delays, should such expenses arise.
Note that while most travel insurance packages also include medical insurance, many will not cover you due to a pre-existing condition. Of course, you won’t realize this until you need to make a claim. Make sure that the policy is going to cover you regardless of your diabetes – otherwise, it could be useless to you.
Make sure that the coverage that you are promised is given to you in writing. Because you are diabetic, you will most likely be charged a higher than usual premium for travel insurance, so don’t be surprised by this.
