Do you enjoy a nice massage? If so, the next time you visit your favorite massage therapist, you should ask about a Shirodhara massage. Before you do this, of course, you need to know what is Shirodhara Massage?

The Shirodhara Massage Method
To understand a Shirodhara Massage, you first need to know what the word means. There are actually two words that make up the one word. The first word is Shiro, which means head in Sanskrit. The second word is dhara, which means flow in Sanskrit.
With that knowledge, the word Shirodhara means to allow warm oil to flow on the head. This is a form of Ayurvedic medicine, and it is practiced in most countries these days, although few people have actually heard of it. In most cases, a massage therapist won’t offer it as a service unless a client specifically asks for this type of massage.
Is that all there is to a Shirodhara Massage?
For the most part, that is all that there is to a Shirodhara Massage. You lie down on your back, and your head will be tilted back over a bowl. A container with a small hole in it will either be held above your head, or will be anchored above your head, and it will be filled with warm oil. You are positioned so that the oil flows down from the bowl, landing directly on the center of your forehead. This is not a drip, but an actual flow. Nothing else is going on while this is happening in most cases.
What is the benefit of Shirodhara Massage?
The center of the forehead is considered to be the third eye. Most people who have this type of massage report that while this massage is in progress, all of the ‘chatter’ in their head stops. Have you ever noticed that your thoughts don’t really ever stop while you are awake – and possibly not even when you are asleep? They don’t, but when you get this type of massage, those thoughts simply stop for a while.
When the massage is finished, people report that they feel as though they have just woken up from a very deep sleep – even though they never actually went to sleep. They feel renewed and recharged, and they find that they are incredibly relaxed, and that their thoughts are clearer.
The only drawback to this type of massage is that the oil gets into your hair if you don’t wear a good shower cap. Many spas and massage therapists do not offer a cap, so you should bring your own from home just to be on the safe side.
