What Is Dairy Free?
A dairy free diet is a diet that does not contain cows milk or anything made with it. People on the dairy free diet do not drink cows milk or eat butter, cheese, cottage or cream cheese, ice cream, casein, whey or any food that contains any such ingredients.
Why Go Dairy Free?
People that go on the dairy free diet usually are lactose intolerant. This means that they lack adequate amounts of lactose in their bodies. Many people suffer from this disease, so they have to be careful when they eat out and they have to read the labels on everything that they buy at the store. Since lactose means milk sugar, they have to use alternatives like soy milk that is not actually made with milk. Many children are also affected with this disease but many outgrow it by the age of three those that don’t usually outgrow it by the time they start school. Milk allergy has different effects on different people, because some peoples allergies are more severe than others. In very few cases milk allergies can lead to death. Symptoms of milk allergy can include common food allergies including such as hives, skin rashes, gastrointestinal distress and breathing problems.
What Is Excluded?
Here is a list of some of the foods that should be avoided if you are going to go on the dairy free diet. Baked goods such as pancakes, casein, muffins, and cakes, butter, au gratin foods, curds, buttermilk, candy with creams and chocolates, cheese sauces, cheese, chocolate milk and drinks, coffee mate, cold cuts like bologna, cottage cheese, cream, creamed or scalloped foods, dry cereals containing milk powder, dry milk solids, dry milk powder, evaporated milk, fondues, ice cream, malted milk, grated cheese, margarine, milk, milk sherbets, milk shakes, non dairy creamers, puddings, some sausage, some wieners, whey, white sauces, and yogurt. This list is not conclusive and if you are planning on going on a dairy free diet you should talk to you doctor for a complete list.

Alternative Foods
Some alternatives for people that are lactose intolerant or people that just want to go on the dairy free diet could drink soy milk, rice milk, almond milk, and any other beverage that has dairy substitute. You can also eat non dairy margarine, ice cream, chocolate, cheese, yogurt, and other milk free or non dairy products.
If you are planning on going on the dairy free diet you are going to need to get some sort of calcium supplement so that you are still getting the amount of calcium that your body needs for you bones.
A dairy free diet is the perfect solution for someone that has allergies to milk and other dairy food. It may also be beneficial for someone that is overweight shed a few pounds. Whatever your reason for going on the dairy free diet make sure you talk to your doctor before you start. Even on a dairy free diet you can have your cake and eat it too as long as it is non dairy.
