What’s the Best Age to Have Kids?

Generally people say that age is just a number, but when it comes to fertility that is not the case. However when determining what’s the best age to have children other factors come into play. The main things that help determine the best age to have children depends on the persons involved as well.

The factors that help any individual decide what the best age is for childbearing include:

Age:  This is especially important for women since the statistics seem to indicate that after age 35 fertility levels begin to fall drastically. The number of women who are becoming first time mothers in their 40s would seem to belie the statistics to some extent. While some women in this age group become pregnant naturally quite a few have had to resort to reproductive techniques. Teen pregnancies also carry their share of risks for both mother and child.  Recent studies have also indicated that there are also risks involved when the father is of an advanced age. According to research children of older fathers have a higher risk of being schizophrenic.

Financial status: Some couples will need to delay having a baby until they can afford the financial responsibility. This therefore means that some persons will not be able to start their families when they are most fertile. This shows that the best time for children is not the same for everyone depending on their life situation.

Readiness to become a parent: Being emotionally ready to have children is important not only for the expectant parents, but for the baby as well. If a person or a couple is not ready for the responsibilities of parenting there will be problems. This readiness has very little to do with one’s age.

On a medical or scientific basis it would seem that between ages 18 to 34 fertility levels are higher and therefore getting pregnant is easiest during this period. The statistics vary somewhat but all they show that fertility generally declines as a woman ages. Chances of conception for women based on age are:

  • 18-34 have a 50 percent chance
  • 35-39 have a 33 percent chance
  • 40-44 have a 20 percent change
  • Over 45 have less than one percent chance

Couples thinking of starting a family should be aware of the statistics, but shouldn’t rush to have children if they are unprepared even if they are older than 34. The best age ideally is that time when the person or couples are best prepared to welcome someone else into their family. This means that they are not only physically ready but also financially and emotionally ready for parenting.
