If you have high cholesterol, your doctor may prescribe any number of medications for you to control it. One of these medications may be a drug called Vytorin. Before you take this drug, you need to know the Vytorin side effects.

What is Vytorin?
Vytorin is a brand name for a combination of two different drugs. These drugs are ezetimibe and simvastatin. Ezetimibe serves to essentially block the amount of bad cholesterol that the body absorbs and simvastatin is a statin drug or a HMG CoA Reductase Inhibitor.
This drug is commonly prescribed to lower LDL cholesterol while increasing the amount of HDL cholesterol, which is good cholesterol. It can be used for other purposes, but this is the most common usage of the drug.
Non-Life Threatening Side Effects of Vytorin
When you take Vytorin, you may experience side effects that are not considered to be life threatening. Often, these side effects will go away with continued usage of the medication. In some cases, if these side effects are really affecting your life, despite the fact that they are non-life threatening, your doctor may try a different medication.
These mild side effects include flu like symptoms, diarrhea, pain in the arms or legs, headaches, upper respiratory tract infections, or a general feeling of tiredness or fatigue. While these problems are not typically serious, your doctor should be notified that you are experiencing these side effects.
Serious Side Effects of Vytorin
If you experience serious side effects, you should seek medical treatment immediately from your doctor or the nearest emergency room. These include a severe allergic reaction, which will typically result in hives, a rash, breathing problems, trouble swallowing, swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, or face, and tightness in the chest. Other serious symptoms include blurred vision, more or less urine output, dark urine, depression, chest pains, a fast or uneven heartbeat, loss of appetite, fever, tender muscles, weakness, pain, numbness, nausea, burning, tingling, stomach pain or tenderness, light colored stool, back pain, bruising, unexplained bleeding – such as nose bleeds – vomiting, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
These symptoms indicate a serious problem which could be life threatening, and the symptoms will need to be treated, and your doctor will need to prescribe a different medication for controlling your cholesterol after that treatment has been implemented with success. In most cases, the new medication will not – or should not – be prescribed until the side effects of the Vytorin have been completely dealt with.
