Udo’s Choice Food Pyramid

This is one of the most interesting food selection guides out there put together by Udo’s Choice Food Pyramid. In fact, this consists of three pyramids designed for three different groups of people. The food guides are for healthy people, sick people and active people. Healthy people are within their general weight, sick people have major medical conditions such as diabetes and progressive supranuclear palsy.

Healthy People

The healthy people pyramid has four levels with level one being the base; the guide recommends food consumption for this group as follows:

1st level: Green, non-starchy vegetables occupy the base of the pyramid.
2nd level: Protein and good fats
3rd level: Carbohydrates, fruits and processed fats, known as fuel foods occupy this level
4th level: white foods, such as white bread, white sugar, white rice and processed cooking oil. In the burnt foods category falls food whose color and taste changes due to application of excessive heat. Included in the burnt foods category are oven baked foods and deep fried foods.

Sick People

The sick people pyramid has the same basic structure as the one for healthy people, but each level of the pyramid explains why different food groups are best consumed as follows:

1st level: Green, non-starchy vegetables, here the recommendation is 9 vegetables to one fruit.
2nd level: Goods fats and protein – fats should make up between 15 and 20 percent of the daily required calories.
3rd level: Carbohydrates, fruits and processed fats. The recommendation is to reduce the amount of carbs and processed fats consumed.
4th level:  White foods and burnt foods are the enemy. Food should be steamed, boiled or eaten raw for maximum health benefits.

Active People

For those persons who fall into the active people category the first and second levels are combined. As such their pyramid is:

1st & 2nd levels: Green, non-starchy vegetables and good fats are recommended for best results.
3rd level:  Carbohydrates, fruits and fats: Up to 70 percent of energy requirements should be met by carbohydrates, depending on activity level. However, it is best to consume unrefined carbohydrates.
4th level: White and burnt foods:  These types of foods should be avoided if possible or had in very small quantities.

The pyramids were designed by Udo Erasmus and are commonly known as Udo’s 3 Diet Pyramids.
