Popular Thinning Hair Treatment

There are a number of prescription drugs for treating hair loss, but interestingly quite a few did not start out for that purpose. However, when used to treat some other conditions, it was observed that hair loss or thinning of hair was diminished. A few of the treatments for thinning hair currently on the market are meant for either men or women, but not both. Some prescription treatments for thinning hair include:

  1. Rogaine:   This FDA approved hair loss treatment has proven to be effective for treating some types of hair loss. Rogaine is also one of the few recognized hair treatments on the market that works for both men and women. Rogaine is the brand name of a drug known as Minoxidil. It can be purchased over the counter. One of the beauties of this product is that it stops hair loss as well as aiding in re-growing lost hair.
  2. Propecia:  This drug can only be obtained by prescription. Unlike Rogaine it is a men only product. It works by helping to control and lower chemicals in the body that cause hair loss. The dosage of finasteride used for hair loss is less than that used to treat an enlarged prostate, for which it was initially developed.
  3. Avodart:  Another drug developed to treat enlarged prostates has become known as a treatment for thinning hair. Not only have studies shown that it stops hair from thinning it also aids in re-growth. The FDA is currently studying Avodart as a hair loss treatment.
  4. Cyproterone Acetate or Diane 35:  Some birth control pills, such as Diane 35 helps prevent thinning hair by blocking male hormones which are also in women. Excessive amounts of male hormones such as testosterone can lead to thinning hair in women.
  5. Hair transplant:  A hair transplant is also quite popular as a means of re-growing or adding volume to thinning hair.

Results from any thinning hair treatment vary from person to person. They are also dependent on the type of hair loss being experienced. Nonetheless, the success rates make them worthwhile for persons trying to retain their crowning glory. Treatment plus taking proper care of the hair, and diet and exercise all help to ensure healthy, stronger hair.
