Are you planning on having a surgery? Have you moved to a new area that has multiple hospitals? Just about any time you read the newspaper or listen to the news, you will hear a hospital horror story. How do you know your hospital is safe? The truth is that mistakes and problems occur in even the best hospitals, but those mistakes and problems are fewer in hospitals that rank well. You need to know the top 10 hospitals in the world.

Who Should You Believe?
There are lots of ‘experts’ that rank hospitals. Unfortunately, if you start comparing lists, you will find that each list is different. This doesn’t mean that one authority is less believable than another. In most cases it means that a different set of criteria was used to determine the ranking of the hospitals. Instead of paying attention to the authority that did the ranking, put more focus on the criteria that was used.
The Top 10 Hospitals in the World
According to the U.S News and World Report, which uses very stringent criteria for ranking purposes, the top ten hospitals in the world are:
- John Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
- Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts
- Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
- Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
- New York Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
- University of California Medical Center, San Francisco, California
- Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri
- Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina
As you can see, the best hospitals in the world are all located in the United States, but you must consider who the ranking authority was in this instance – a company that is based in the United States. If you were to check with a different authority, in a different country, you would likely find that hospitals located in that country ranked the highest on their list. Therefore, when you are trying to choose a hospital for a surgery or for another procedure, you need to determine where a hospital ranks, in terms of care for your specific surgery, procedure, or condition.
Where Does Your Hospital Rank?
If you are wondering where your hospital ranks in the grand scheme of things, and it isn’t in the top ten list, there are definitely ways to check it out. You can easily do this at consumerreports.org. If your hospital doesn’t rank well, you may want to know which one near you does rank decently and why. In the event of a true emergency, get to the closest hospital, and then request to be transferred once you are stable, or have a loved one prepared to do this for you.
