Cancer Fact vs Cancer Myth

There are mass amounts of information available on cancer.  Many of the claims made about cancer are myths. It is important to not believe everything you hear or read; you need to know is it a myth or is it fact.  Ask your doctor if you have concerns or questions about your potential to develop cancer or about current treatment options available to you if you have cancer.  You should seek advice of a credible professional to prove or disprove any cancer information you read or hear.

Myth #10 – The number of people dying from cancer is increasing as the population rises.   This is false.  There are more people being diagnosed with cancer but the number of cancer related deaths is on the decline.  More people are now living longer lives with improved quality of life due to the better treatment options and early diagnosis.

Myth #9 – Cancer is always painful.  This is false. Some cancers never cause any pain.  Some cancers do cause pain but usually in the early stages of cancer there is no pain.

Myth#8 – You will die if you get cancer, it is a death sentence.  This is false.  With the treatments available today and new ways of detecting cancer early many people are living longer, fuller lives.

Myth #7 – Using Cell phones cause brain cancer. There is no scientific evidence to verify this claim.

Myth #6 – Using Deodorant and antiperspirants cause cancer.  Neither the FDA nor the National Cancer Institute have found any evidence that the use of underarm products causes cancer.

Myth#5 – Hair Dye causes cancer. A study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association states that the use of hair dye does not increase the risk for cancer development.

Myth#4 – Cancer causes your hair to fall out.  This is not true.  First of all, cancer does not cause the hair loss.  Some treatments used to treat the cancer do have this side effect.  However, all people receiving these treatments do not lose their hair.

Myth#3 – Breast cancer only affects women – This is not true.  Men can and do get breast cancer!   The occurrence of breast cancer in men versus women is about 100 to 1.  But men do get breast cancer and left untreated, they can die because of it.

Myth #2 – Cancer is contagious.  This is not true.  There is no cancer that is contagious.

Myth #1 – There is a cure for cancer and pharmaceutical companies are hiding it.  First, you need to realize that some forms of cancer are curable.  Second, pharmaceutical executives and their families are developing cancer at the same rates as the rest of the world and they are as anxious to find a cure as anyone else.

Consider the Source Before You Believe a Cancer Myth

Only rely on credible sources when you are gathering information related to cancer. Popular, published medical journals, Cancer society’s and research center information that has scientific evidence that the claim is true.  Again, you can always ask your doctor if you have any questions about cancer, its causes, prevention or treatments.
