Therapeutic grade essential oils have been around for thousands of years and have been part of healing modalities throughout that time. An essential oil is the essence of a plant, or its life blood. It can be derived from plant vines, petals or even sap. Essential oils are effective whether inhaled through diffusers or applied topically.
Mixing essential oils with liquids or foods to be eaten or drunk is another way to incorporate them into a healing method. This application tends to produce a much more intense reaction. It is very important to note that not all essential oils should be taken internally. Never assume it is safe to ingest an essential oil. Some oils are cut with chemicals or additives that will make you sick. If it doesn’t specifically state that it is safe to ingest on the label – call the manufacturer to check.
I have assembled an arsenal of essential oils made by a company known as Young Living Essential Oils. Since the company offers more than 300 varieties, I’ve highlighted some of my favorites for General Wellness, First Aid and Weight Loss.
General wellness – this includes immune support and maintaining health
Thieves – this is an oil blend of clove, lemon, cinnamon, eucalyptus and rosemary. It is an excellent choice for immune support and works best when used as a preventative. Two drops rubbed on the soles of bare feet in the morning and before bed is recommended. When guests are expected at my home and they’re bringing runny noses with them, it is my first choice for the diffuser.
Stress Away – an oil blend containing copaiba (copaiba) lime, cedarwood, vanilla, ocotea and lavender which helps the body relax.
Lemon oil – this is a great choice for children. It can be used it in place of traditional hand sanitizers, which are mostly rubbing alcohol based gels. Lemon has purifying, revitalizing and uplifting properties and contains dlimonene, a powerful antioxidant.
First Aid – dealing with cuts and scrapes and burns
Lavender – this oil is a must for any first aid kit. Lavender has been called the Swiss Army Knife of essential oils. It is terrific for scrapes and bruises. Lavender is antiseptic, promotes healing and is soothing to the skin. I recommend placing a few drops in a spray bottle mixed with water for those brush burns or cuts that are too sensitive to touch. Mix lavender and pure aloe vera gel for an all-natural sunburn ointment. Also helps calm and relax you after an injury.
Peppermint – this is my go-to oil for upset stomachs and fevers. It can be diluted though, as one drop of peppermint oil is equal to 30 cups of peppermint tea. I dip a toothpick into the bottle then swirl it around in a cup of water or tea to drink. It can also be applied to the soles of the feet and navel to reduce a fever. Peppermint can be used topically for allergic reactions, bug bites, hives and skin inflammations where the skin is not broken. A drop or two of peppermint oil in a spray bottle can be sprayed over the area for a cooling effect.

Weight loss
Citrus oils – the famous (or infamous) grapefruit diet is definitely an unhealthy choice – no one should eat 25 grapefruits a day – but the science behind it is sound. Incorporating citrus oil into a daily regimen of healthy eating can help you flush toxins and loose weight.
Ocotea – this oil can be taken daily to help regulate blood sugar and reduce cravings caused by sugar or energy “crashes”
Dill – this is another oil that can combat cravings. It can be combined with an ounce of juice or taken in a capsule.
Ginger – this oil will boost metabolism and help your body burn calories faster
It must be said that simply relying on essential oils to lose weight would be foolish. Combined with a wholesome, well balanced diet and exercise, though, they can help you on your weight loss journey.
