The Use of Psychedelic Drugs for Depression

Which Psychedelic Drugs are Used to Treat Depression?

These studies that have been conducted concern the use of mushrooms known as magic mushrooms on the street and psilocybin in the medical field. These mushrooms are considered to be hallucinogens.

These psychedelic drugs are not used for all cases of depression, of course, and the issue is still in the research phase. However, the research done thus far looks to confirm that this is an ideal way to treat what is known as intractable depression or depression that has not been responsive to traditional antidepressant medication. It is also believed that the same psychedelic drugs can be used to treat anxiety.

Have Other Psychedelic Drugs Been Tested?

Along with magic mushrooms, researchers are also testing other psychedelic drugs, such as ecstasy and LSD. Not only are the drugs tested for depression and anxiety, but also for PTSD, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Ketamine has also been tested.

It is vital that you understand that while these drugs are available on the street, you should never take this type of treatment into your own hands for your depression or other mental disorders, or that of a loved one. Doing so can be very dangerous, not to mention the legal factors involved. You may, however, be able to get in on some of the clinical trials and clinical studies that will be going on now that the research process has begun and shows favorable results.

Will Your Doctor Prescribe Psychedelic Drugs?

The chances are good that someday your doctor may actually be able to prescribe these psychedelic drugs to treat depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental disorders, but that isn’t today. It will most likely still take years of research and testing before this is even considered, and then of course there will be governmental red tape to get through.

In the end, depending on your current age, while they have found a medical use for these drugs in your lifetime, there is a strong possibility that the medical community will not be allowed to actually prescribe such drugs during your lifetime.
