The Nevocellular Nevi (Moles)

Nevi are harmless skin excrescences, caused by the non-cancerous human papilloma virus. In reality, these moles are benign and can be organized in several categories: circumscribed skin deformities of embryonic origin or they can occur at any age; they are most common in young people, usually children and teenagers, and evolve slowly. There are also tuberous nevi which take shapes similar to grains of raspberry or berry.

Papillomas or fibroids are nevi which occur around the neckline, usually after the age of 40. There are also vascular and glandular moles, depending on the tissue from which they develop. Their appearance should not alarm us but it is best to consult a dermatologist in order to receive appropriate guidance.

When Do Nevi Become Dangerous?

Most of the times, moles are harmless; however, in some cases, they can become dangerous. If your moles change their color, size and aspect or if they itch, hurt, bleed or get inflamed, then you need medical advice as soon as possible. Some moles have a higher risk of malignancy. Many birth signs can be counted among the dangerous moles. This type of nevi is called congenital nevi and may substantially increase the risk of melanoma, a form of skin cancer. The most dangerous moles are the cutaneous ones, larger than 20 cm in diameter. If you discover such nevi on your body, you need to seek medical advice and treatment and most importantly, avoid home made treatments.

Moles with the size of pencil erasers, irregularly shaped, darker in the center and with pink edges, are called atypical or dysplastic nevi. These are also very dangerous moles. Other major factors that significantly increase the risk of melanoma are the excessive exposure to the sun, family medical history and certain physical features such as red hair, very white skin, blue eyes.

The easiest way to combat malignant melanoma is with preventive measures. Dangerous nevi must be diagnosed as fast as possible. Many people treat their nevi with home made oils of Castor-oil plant or celandine. While some nevi seem to disappear after such a treatment, there is no guarantee that the problem has been successfully dealt with. Another typical home treatment for nevi is with cosmetic and dermo-cosmetic treatments or simply the removal of hair through epilation. These sorts of home made remedies aren’t recommended.

The genetic factors involved in producing melanoma can not be modified or eradicated, but it is possible to significantly reduce the risk of developing skin cancer if you respect some simple rules related to sun exposure and appropriate protective creams.

The Surgical Removal Of Nevi

Some nevi pose a major risk to your health, while others are simply unaesthetic. These are the primary incentives that determine most of the people to resort to surgical removal of nevi. The most popular technique of nevi removal is a simple excision with a scalpel under local anesthesia; the practitioner will remove the entire mole, then make deep suture wire points which are absorbed and superficial suture points which are removed one week after surgery. The scar is generally a little larger than the mole, but it disappears almost completely with time.
