Discovering the Healing Powers of Manuka Honey

Studies have been conducted at the Waikato University in New Zealand.  Active Manuka honey has antibacterial properties primarily because of the slow release of hydrogen peroxide which is formed by the enzyme glucose oxidase it contains.  With research to back up the claims of the honey showing it has bioactive components it has become accepted as a respectable therapeutic treatment and is becoming more widely used.  Since it is indigent only to New Zealand it does cost a bit more than your regular grocer’s honey.

Active Manuka Honey has some very unique qualities.  It is not affected by enzymes in the body that generally destroy the components of hydrogen peroxide. The honey has been shown to be an effective treatment against many super infections such as MRSA. The antibacterial factor it contains is not affected by dilution, heat, time or light.  Unlike other honeys it does not require moisture or oxygen so it can be used covered with a bandage or left open to the air and still work.  The antibacterial factor of active Manuka honey diffuses deeper into the tissues than the enzymes of other honeys.

The Healing Powers of Manuka Honey are based on the UMF Rating

The antibacterial properties of each jar of Manuka honey is printed on the label in the form of a UMF rating.  UMF is the “Unique Manuka Factor”.  This rating informs the consumer of how much antibacterial property are found in each unique jar. If the rating is higher it contains more.  For medical uses you will want a rating of at least 10 and ideally between 10 and 18.
