Macular degeneration is sometimes referred to as age-related macular degeneration. This condition results when the center of the visual field becomes eroded. While the direct vision is affected, the peripheral vision usually remains intact. In this way, it differs from total blindness in that the sufferer can still function, albeit on a limited scale.
When someone develops this condition, the changes usually come about very slowly. It is painless, and involves death of cells in the macula. The macula is an oval coloured spot in the eye that protects the eye from excess light. The condition can be detected by an examination of the eye, but sometimes the deterioration is far advanced before help is sought.
The Effects of Macular Degeneration
People who suffer from macular degeneration will experience its effects at different rates. These include but are not limited to:
- Fogginess of vision, particularly the central vision
- Difficulty telling the difference between light and dark colors
- Straight lines in a grid may appear wavy, and some parts may not be visible at all
- Reading will become progressively difficult
- There may be problems with vision recovery after encountering a bright light
- Some people experience problems differentiating between objects in the foreground and objects in the background
Treating the Condition Naturally
While there is no known cure for the condition, existing vision can be preserved through natural methods. Age-related macular degeneration has been linked by some studies to free radical damage. Therefore, a diet rich in antioxidants can work as a useful preventative measure.
Diet: Foods that contain high levels of vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids are known to protect the eyes from macular degeneration and other serious eye problems.

Cysteine: This amino acid has been shown to help in preventing cataracts and macular degeneration. Aside from animal sources, it can also be found in broccoli, garlic onions, oats and red peppers.
Grape seed extract: This is useful for treating a number of conditions linked to free radical damage. The extract has been used to treat patients suffering from macular degeneration as it is believed to slow the progression of the disease. It also helps to strengthen blood vessels in the eye.
Bilberry: While more studies need to be done, this relative of the blueberry does show promise. Apart from its anti-oxidant properties, it is known to help treat vascular disorders. This is an important consideration since macular degeneration is sometimes caused by abnormal growth of blood vessels inside the eye.
Some people believe that everyone with macular degeneration will eventually lose their sight. This is not the case however as many sufferers have benefitted from natural therapies. In fact some persons have reported experiencing improvement in some cases. The best course of action for healthy individuals is to adopt a preventative diet. This should include a wide variety of antioxidants and omega 3 fatty acids. If you experience any vision problems you should get a comprehensive check as soon as possible. A diagnosis of macular degeneration does not mean that blindness is inevitable. Preserving and improving your sight will call for lifestyle changes and a commitment to new eye-healthy dietary habits.
