Since the cloning of Dolly the sheep in 1996, cloning has become something of a buzzword, especially in scientific circles. Formerly a staple of science fiction stories, it entered the public consciousness as it never had before. Not surprisingly it has generated controversy, with many of the objections coming religious organizations. Ethical implications aside however, there are however, advantages and disadvantages to the practice of cloning. Those listed below are just a few of the many pros and cons associated with cloning.
Advantages of Cloning
1/Potential benefits to modern medicine
Even today, the full potential of stem cells has not been fully explored. The issue of stem cells has led to controversy because embryos are generally used and they have to be destroyed for the cells to be used. However, a number of researchers believe that stem cells will eventually change the face of medicine as we know it. Given the fact that the cells can be manipulated to mimic other types of cells, this can provide new ways to treat diseases like cancer and Alzheimer’s.
Cloning also offers hope to persons needing organ transplants. People requiring organ transplants to survive an illness often wait years for a suitable donor. In many cases these patients die waiting, as there are long lists of people requiring organs. Theoretically, cloning could eliminate this by producing more animals that can act as suitable donors. Pig livers have been successfully transplanted to human beings, as an interim measure until a human liver is found. Additionally, cloning of these animals not put a burden on the world’s food supply.
2/Helping infertile couples
Cloning offers couples dealing with fertility the chance to have a child of their own. Many infertile couples can’t be helped by the techniques currently available. In fact, although some states have already banned human cloning because of ethical issues, more couples struggling to have children are starting to consider the possibilities that cloning offer.
3/Reverse the aging process
Cloning is being touted as a future answer to reverse the effects of aging.The antiaging market is a prime target becuase it is alreay a multibillion industry.
4/Protecting Endangered Species
Despite the best efforts of conservationists worldwide, some species are nearing extinction. The successful cloning of Dolly represents the first step in protecting endangered wildlife.
5/ Improving food supply
Cloning could provide a means of cultivating plants that are stronger and more resistant to diseases, while producing more. The same could happen to livestock as well where diseases such as foot and mouth disease could be eradicated.Cloning could therefore effectively solve the world’s food problem and minimize or possible eadicate starvation.
Disadvantages of Cloning
1/The Element of Uncertainty
While the cloning of Dolly was seen as a success story, many embryos were destroyed before the desired result was achieved. The process started with 277 eggs, and Dolly was the single successful outcome. Regardless of success in other areas, the field of cloning still has a long way to go. Infertile couples for example, could go through the same heartache as they would if in vitro fertilization failed.
2/Inheriting diseases
Cloning creates a copy of the original. A human clone would therefore inherit the genetic traits of its predecessor. This includes genetic abnormalities and diseases. Dolly the sheep for example exhibited signs of what some suggested were premature aging, although this was firmly denied by her ‘developers’.
3/The Potential for Abuse
If human cloning became a reality what checks and balances would be put in place to prevent abuse? Would scientists go overboard with the technology? If a couple has a clone that they are not happy with, what would they do next? These are all questions that must be raised in any discussion on cloning. Some have expressed the view that clones could be grown in a farm-like fashion simply for harvesting organs or stem cells. The potential for devaluing human life cannot be ignored.
Cloning, like so many other issues that have faced modern science, must be carefully evaluated. There will always be detractors, those who feel that anyone involved in cloning is playing God. And this may not be too far from the truth. However, any discussion on cloning must be looked at in the context of its inherent value to mankind.

Cloning is a terrible thing, humans are trying to play God and that just doesn’t work.
There are a few types of cloning.
Therapeutic cloning is where you copy cells to to make tissue so that the doctors can help heal a person. This is actually used and i’m not so sure that it’s bad. Coz that’s what our bodies do naturally, doctors are just speeding up the process and giving a helpful hand.
Reproductive cloning is 100% bad. It is humans making life and it shouldn’t be done. Animals have instincts but humans also have souls, which means that a human can’t make a human, just a body.
The ‘child’ can only look like one parent and that destroys their individualism.
Replacement cloning is EVIL too! It is where a person who is about to die has their body cloned, the doctors put their brain into the new body so theoretically they have replaced their body. This is stupid and cannot work. They would have to kill the person and move their brain while it is still working, however the body would not contain the person. The person is dead. Thankfully this is just a theory and hasn’t been tried.

man, i agree with alot of people, and i think that therapudic cloning is okay because as the guy says its natural and it helps a person, but i dont think you should clone animals because they may be clones, but they arent the same, and if you lost your child, even if you cloned him he would just look like them, it wouldnt be them, they would just be a reminder of what happened, they shouldnt be replaced. you are devalueing life saying if something died you could just replace it with another that is genetically the same. a human has never before been cloned so we dont know how the thoughts of the clones are, animals have instinct which they recieve from environment, but can they really think as we do? we dont know how the free will and intellect of the clone would be affected.

I think cloning is terrible.
Religion aside, slaughtering clones for their organs is downright disgusting, and inhumane.
If we want to keep control of our race, we should reproduce, and not kill the planet.
If you want to clone a loved one who was dead, that’s a sick idea, it will only show that you are someone who thinks life can easily be replaced with a couple of test tubes and a petri dish.
Anyway, if you did clone someone who died, TONNES of clones die of health issues.
For every 2 clones that survive, millions die before even becoming an embryo, let alone after being born.
Anyway, if a clone did live, it would probably die soon, which would DIMINISH the human race, not expand it.
Cloning to remake an organs, with stem cells… that’s a good idea. It saves lives.
I don’t see what’s wrong with it.
But everything else is sick.
And cloning to expand life is selfish.

Wow, a lot of you are really uneducated about this. I did not look into cloning until this year. I found out my mom has diabetes and congestive heart failure. She was told this year she needs a heart transplant. We are not sure how much more time she has. She is on a long list for a new heart. I’m only interested in cloning of organs. If this was legal my mom could have a new heart. I watch her suffer daily with diabetes. I would love to find a cure to diabetes. Cloning research has proven that cloning could cure diseases. I am against cloning identical humans, animals, etc. I am religious also. I’ve thought about it and really when someone is in the hospital and you hook them up with ivs, lifesupport, etc. Isnt that going against god’s will?? So what would cloning organs be different?? I’m for it! =)

One of the biggest controversies is that the clones would be killed for their organs. Are you basing this off of “The Island?” That was a movie. The reality is that you can grow an organ independently, requiring no sacrifice of human life. Do your research before freaking out. Should we clone people? I think not, but don’t jump to bizarre conclusions.

Think about it. We already slaughter animals for food. We grow them for that purpose. Growing an animal for their organs as well really isn’t much different. We donate our organs after we die. i see no problem with cloning.
clones are not created to harvest organs btw, that is in the movies not one clone has been made which has then had its head cut of and organs taken!
and ppl bitching about us trying to be like god, that is not the purpose of cloning (and befor u us god as an argument prove that he exists).
cloning has been created so that cloning of viruses and cancers etc can be cloned so that scientist can then modify them so that we can eradicate them…. and honestly if i got cancer and someone told me that cloning has come so far that they can get rid of that cancer then id be pretty fukin happy.

ladyhydra is wrong and right…. clones hav had their organs used for transplants, but they hav not been killed for them, after their deaths their organs hav been used.
and i also think that the whole thing about going against gods will is overrated. i mean if gods will is that some ppl have good lives and some ppl dont then fuk him cause his a pathetic asshole.
thei is also that whole debate on bringing back the dead through cloning… i dont know if i agree with bringing back the dead because if e kept bringing back our dead loved ones we would be extreemly overpopulated because ppl just dont die (technically). on the whole i think cloning is a good thing but it could easily go to far.

I’m not sure what to think about cloning. It’s a thoroughly interesting topic, but I don’t think people should be cloned… I enjoyed reading the article, helped me out in a science project on cloning… But I do agree with what has been said, cloning is good because it could save endangered species, and help medical research… but new diseases can be inherited, and they could easily mutate into a new disease! But, I’m only 15 years old, what do I know?

in my opinion, cloning organs is okay for people who need a transplant or something like that, but not a whole human being!
first of all, its creepy…
secondly, these “clones” will just be abused by the scientists who have created them…i mean killing them when they are done with them? seriously?
besides, other people will just think of them as experiments…i mean technically…aren’t they synthesized?
also, u cannot clone a person who is dying or is dead just to replace him…technically, the clone is a completely different human being…it will not have the exact thoughts or actions as the person who passed away…and it is cruel to even think that a person could be replaced,just like that…
then theres the fact that the period of gestation could alter the clone:it will not be the exact copy of the “original”…the mitochondrion in the initial cell is different from that of the original organism…
i also heard that the lifespan of the “clone” is much less than that of the original…
as i understand, there is still a lot to work on in order to improve “cloning”, and just so u know, i am against it…
it is pretty cool for fiction to become a reality… but honestly, we don’t need doubles or triples of the same person…one is enough…unless they are naturally twins or triplets or whatever (that is pretty cool)…but not synthesized ones…
and if parents want kids so badly, they can just adopt… they would be doing a good deed out of it too…

So, First of al, this article was very interesting and helpfull. Secondly, cloning is such a bad idea. Everyone who is being selfish and only thinking about more penis, girls and all that other crap needs to just shut up. And all those people who think that cloning a dead relative or friend is totally sick, it is stupid and just because they look like the same person, does not mean they are the same. They will have different personalities and interests. It is also totally against God. He is the creator of everything that we live for and even if some of you do not believe in God, some of us do. We would be taking his responsibility and duty out of his hands and into those of people who could use it against us. I do not think cloning people is right and it is against everything I revolve around but if you think about it, people could survive diseases and heart failures. You have to put yourself in the same position as others. What if your mother or sibling or best friend needed a heart donor in the next six months or they are going to die. Would’nt it be great if they had a donor that could give them the things they need to live. And cloning animals and plants, that is just stupid, there is no point. Species are going to die off and the best thing to do is remember the good things that happened when they were around, just like humans. Remember them for who they were and make them proud. But yeah, all in all, everything else is pretty messed up.

Abuse, a problem that is always going to be brought up in any scientific discovery it seems. Another thing that is commonly used to downplay the role of science is religion. Your going to get misuse no matter what the subject is. This whole “god” bit is a freedom of those to believe or not to believe we are not “creating” individuals but re-creating an existing individual its like flipping the same coin twice. Lets say the original gets heads, the second could get heads or tails, we dont know but other factors can change the outcome being the individual, I strongly believe if we can find a way to prevent the misuse of cloning we can discover more about human diseases and prevention of them imagine if one life was lost 100x vs 100 individual lives lost before the cure is found i know these numbers are massively low but still. If we can first find a way for the human race to at least remotely unite cloning may not have the massively problematic outlook everyone on here is giving it. Furthermore, the argument of overpopulation can be fought off with moderate resistance. We humans are as close to being able to spread to other planets as any known organism in the recorded history who knows maybe using matured clones to test wether or not a planet truly is habitable (after extensive atmospheric testing of course) overpopulation may be come a fear of the past. Plus, if there are more people then more ideas arise and the greater chance someone will have the ambition to try them despite the odds. The perfect boiling pot for Advancement soup.

I am against cloning because God made you a certain way for a certain time periode to help certain people in that time frein, not to help others at a different time like the feuture. Im a bit of a fence sitter myself on the subject. Though in saying that I think that people should be open to both the possibilities and impacts of cloning. And the Church I think needs to think about human life and see that children actually enrich someones life and doesn’t the Natural Law say that ‘Human Life is sacred’ well if you ask me human life is and shouldn’t we all respect and acknowledge that? The Church I think takes it to literally though and overlooks the simplicity of making a life sacred and appealing as if it was not, wouldn’t life then just be thrown away?
