Prepare for a Good Night’s Sleep

First, get prepared for sleep. A hot bath before bed can do wonder’s in the quality of sleep that you get. This can help to reduce some joint inflammation, and to eliminate many aches and pains that are associated with arthritis.

Also consider switching to satin sheets or satin pajamas. Silk works as well. This is because it makes it easier to move during the night – because it is more slippery. Make sure that you take any inflammation medication that your doctor has prescribed before bed, and take the time to wind down before bedtime as well.

Get Tucked into Bed Properly for Good Sleep

If you have arthritis, you may need extra pillows. Sleep with a pillow either under your knees – if you lie on your back – or between your knees if you lie on your side. Additionally, if you lie on your side, use a pillow to support the upper portion of your body. You may need two pillows under your head to keep your spine properly aligned.

You should also strongly consider purchasing a mattress or mattress pad that conforms to your body, reducing pressure points. Many arthritis sufferers who have tried this have found a great deal of relief.

Talk to Your Doctor about Sleep

If sleep eludes you due to pain, talk to your doctor about a sleeping remedy, such as Ambien or Lunesta. These sleeping pills are relatively safe and non-addictive, and they can be the difference between quality sleep and lack of sleep.

The more restful your night is, the better your arthritis condition will be the following day. When you do not sleep well, you will usually find that your joints are stiffer and more painful in the morning.

You will have enough problems and necessary changes in your life due to your arthritis. Do not allow your quality of sleep to make the situation worse, and certainly do not suffer from lack of sleep due to arthritis. Do not be afraid to talk to your doctor about sleep options for your condition.
