Purpose of Shampoo Conditioners

When you shower, you probably wash your hair. Are you picky about the shampoo that you use? Do you purchase shampoo that is designed to prevent split ends and breakage? Do you purchase shampoo based on the smell? Is shampoo enough? Does it even do what it claims to do? What is the purpose of shampoo conditioners?

Shampoo is Meant to Clean the Hair

Lots of different shampoos make lots of different claims in terms of what it does for your hair. Shampoo alone does one thing for your hair – it cleans it. Shampoo is designed to get the dirt and excess oil out of your hair. Because this is its role, it contains ingredients that actually dry out the hair, regardless of whether it is labeled as a ‘moisturizing’ shampoo.

While shampoo is an important product in your hygiene, it isn’t enough for healthy hair. For truly healthy hair, you need regular hair trims and a good conditioner that addresses the specific needs of your hair.

Conditioners are Designed to Condition the Hair

Conditioners do exactly what the name implies – they condition the hair. You can think of a conditioner as a personal trainer for your hair. Using the conditioner addresses the problems areas that your hair has, just as a personal trainer would address those lumpy thighs or a sagging behind.

Conditioners come in a variety of ‘flavors.’ You can choose conditioners that moisturize the hair, reconstruct the hair, detangle the hair, make the hair less frizzy, make the hair straighter or curlier, or a variety of other things. In fact, depending on your needs, you may actually want to purchase three or four different conditioners, and combine them. If more than one type of conditioner is needed for your hair, do not use them separately. Instead, combine them in one bottle, in equal parts, and make sure that they are mixed well before using them.

You should also consider ‘leave-in’ conditioners. These are conditioners that are applied to the hair after you have washed it with shampoo, and the conditioner is not rinsed out until the next time you shampoo your hair. Experts agree that these are the most beneficial types of conditioners for your hair.

You Need Shampoo and Conditioner

You may have noticed that many shampoos also contain conditioner for your hair. If shampoo is meant to clean, and conditioner is meant to condition, should the two be combined? Most experts actually agree that you should first use shampoo, and rinse all of the shampoo out, and then use a separate conditioner for your hair, since the two products play two distinctly different roles.
