Yeast infections are a common occurrence and most women will experience a yeast infection at least once or twice, some women are more prone to this type of infection and may experience more.

A type of vaginitis it is characterized by a vaginal discharge, vaginal irritation and itching in the vaginal region, both interior and exterior. A yeast infection is not a sexually transmitted disease but it can be spread through genital-oral contact.
What Causes a Yeast Infection and what are the Symptoms?
A yeast infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of the natural yeast that is present in the vagina. This can be the result of taking antibiotics, uncontrolled disease such as diabetes, impaired immune system, pregnancy or any situation that changes the amount of bacteria that is normally present in the vaginia which helps to maintain the balance of yeast.
The symptoms of a yeast infection include redness or swelling of the vulva, pain or soreness in the vagina, itching or irritation in or at the entrance of the vaginia, burning during intercourse or during urination and a distinct thick white discharge from the vaginal. The discharge has no odor and has the appearance and consistency of cottage cheese.
Natural Remedies for Yeast Infections
Although prescription medication is available to treat yeast infections you may find that a natural remedy is easier and healthier for you. There are several natural ways available to treat them at home.
- Vinegar Douche – 2 tsp. of cider vinegar mixed in 1 cup of warm water
- Yogurt Douche – 1 Tbsp. of plain live yogurt mixed with 1 cup of warm water
- Baking Soda Douche- 1 cup of baking soda mixed with 1 quart of water
- Tea Tree Oil Cream can be used externally to help relieve itching and irritation
- Garlic – either ingested whole or in pill form or used in suppository form vaginally
Natural Prevention of Yeast Infections
There are some steps you can take to naturally reduce your risk of developing a yeast infection.
- Wearing cotton undergarments can help to reduce moisture, also avoid wearing tight fitting pants, undergarments or pantyhose.
- Do not use scented tampons, pads or feminine hygiene sprays or cleansing wipes and avoid douching.
- Do not remain in wet clothing such as workout clothes you have sweated in or a wet bathing suit, change to dry clothing as soon as possible.
- Avoid long soaks in the bath tub and bubble baths.
