An overlooked area for prostate health is the use of herbs. Herbs have been used for years and years to treat and maintain health. From general health to specific areas of health, herbs are the best and natural approach for health concerns. This article seeks to inform readers about some of the most common herbs used to maintain and treat prostate health.

Prostate Herbs
1/ Saw Palmetto – a small palm tree commonly found in the Atlantic seaboard. Probably the most common herb used for treating prostate enlargement (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia). This herb has been used all over the world for prostate health. Beta Sitosterol is the main ingredient in saw palmetto. This ingredient has been proven to aid in the shrinking of enlarged prostates. It also improves urinary problems for men suffering from BPH. The only drawback for saw palmetto in comparison to using prescription drugs is the amount of time that it can take to shrink the prostate.
2/ Red Clover – this herb is actually of member of the pea family. It is another herb used for prostate enlargement and maintaining proper prostate size. As a matter of fact, recent studies have shown that red clover is better than saw palmetto at reducing prostate enlargement. Red clover can prevent growth of the prostate and the symptoms associated with it. This herb also has powerful antioxidants that can ward off cancer growth.
3/ Ginkgo Biloba – a tree native to China. Ginkgo Biloba is generally known for usage in memory and concentration but also has surprising reproductive health benefits. Studies have shown that ginkgo improves blood flow to the penis. It also helps to treat depression symptoms that can lead to impotence or Erectile Dysfunction(ED).
4/ Stinging Nettle – this herb is native to Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America. It is used to increase urinary flow and urges to urinate and thus can help with emptying of the bladder. Studies show that stinging nettle helps with BPH symptoms but doesn’t necessarily shrink the prostate. Scientists can’t explain the reasoning behind this but studies support their findings.
5/ Pygeum – an evergreen tree native to Africa. This herb specifically aids in the management of urine flow and nighttime bathroom trips. It also relaxes the bladder to help with the urgency to urinate.
6/ Rye pollen – a native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, rye pollen is used to manage prostate enlargement. Many double-blind trials have shown rye pollen to help reduce symptoms associated with BPH.
These prostate herbs can be taken as separate products or in a combination formula. Studies have shown that taking these herbs in combination together may have added benefits compared to taking them separately. There are many formulas to choose from on the market. You want to choose products in their most “natural” or “raw” state. Be sure to thoroughly research standalone products and formulas before buying. Please consult with your health care provider before starting a prostate management plan.
