Commercial cleaners can work very well but they are not necessarily superior to homemade cleaning products that are created using inexpensive ingredients that you may already have. The idea is to select non-toxic elements that are cost-effective. There are many benefits to using this approach:

• No toxins in the air from aerosol cleaners
• No chemicals left on surfaces that children may touch or put into their mouths
• Inexpensive
• Effective
• Custom-made cleaners for your specific tastes

o Strength
o Amount

Some people prefer to make just enough to finish the task at hand while others like to create batches that are designed to last a few weeks. Customizing the natural cleaning products to your specific tastes is one of the best benefits to this approach. A few simple recipes can give you an idea of how to make your own recipes for natural cleaning products at home.

Bath and Kitchen Cleaners

All-purpose cleaners typically involve the two most popular rooms in the home: the kitchen and bathroom. These rooms require the most attention but you don’t have to spend a lot to get the job done. In addition, one simple recipe can be used in both rooms effectively.

A simple cleanser can be made using nothing more than baking soda. This is a great product for cleaning sinks, microwaves, ovens bathtubs and commodes. Consider some of the following approaches:

• Sprinkle baking soda on the surface you want to clean as you would a powder cleanser
• Add natural laundry detergent or soap to baking soda to make a paste
• Mix baking soda with an essential oil of your choice for a fragrant cleanser paste

Disinfect using rubbing alcohol. If you ever noticed the smell of sterile environments including doctors’ offices, you may recognize the smell of rubbing alcohol. Some like to use a little peroxide in skin drains to disinfect as well.

A simple mixture of vinegar and water can be used to clean floors. The usual mixture involves one cup of vinegar to two gallons of water but you can alter the strength according to your tastes. Dirtier floors may require a little more vinegar.

Furniture Polish

Furniture polish can be very expensive and it can be filled with toxins. Make your own using ½ cup of olive oil mixed with ¼ cup of lemon juice. This simple mixture removes smudges and dirt while providing healthy oils for conditioning. Spray the concoction onto the surface of the wood and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Window, Chrome, and Mirror Cleaner

Rubbing alcohol is a great disinfectant but it also evaporates in record time, making it a great choice for cleaning shiny surfaces with streak-free results. Add one cup of water to one cup of rubbing alcohol and add one tablespoon of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Use as you would any window cleaner.
