A popular variation of the food pyramid is the Latin American Food Pyramid. This food selection guide makes use of commonly used foods among Latin Americans such as: beans, grains, nuts, limes, bananas, grapes, kale and spinach. As is becoming the norm on many food pyramids, exercise is at the base of the diagram. Interestingly, the next level is divided into three triangles with the larger middle triangle being whole grains, beans, nuts and tubers. The other two triangles are vegetables and fruits. The pyramid recommends that foods from all three groups be eaten at every meal. On a daily basis fish and shellfish, poultry, dairy and oils (plant-based) are to be eaten, but in smaller portions as outlined on the pyramid. Meat, eggs and sweets are recommended on a weekly basis.

Additional recommendations of the Latin American Food Pyramid are to drink at least six eight-ounce glasses of water daily. Alcohol consumption is permitted in moderation. There is also a version of the plan for children.
