You may have sensitive teeth and gums that don’t respond well to over the counter mouthwashes, toothpastes and other dental products. Or perhaps you are just concerned about the chemicals and other unnecessary ingredients you could accidentally ingest by using a commercial product. Whatever the reasoning, you can have great teeth and gums even whey following some natural dental care tips.

The foundation of good oral hygiene is visiting your dentist at least once every six months for regular teeth cleaning and check-ups. However for those in between times, natural dental care tips can be used to clean teeth, freshen breath, relieve toothaches and even assuage canker sores and other irritants.
The Power of Herbs and Natural Ingredients
There are certain herbs which have natural anti-bacterial and antiseptic qualities that make them perfect for your oral hygiene schedule. Even if you choose to use regular toothpaste, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil to your toothbrush. As part of natural dental care, tea tree oil can fight bacteria that thrive in your mouth, killing germs that may cause gum soreness and other problems.
Regular baking soda was used for years before commercial toothpastes came out and this handy staple product in the kitchen works wonders as a natural dental care solution. Baking soda has anti-bacterial properties which help with mouth germs while the light abrasiveness helps clear away food debris and tartar build-up.
Natural Mouthwashes
Green tea is packed full of healthy antioxidants and it is also an excellent natural dental care option as a mouthwash or simple oral rinse. If you choose to use brewed green tea as a mouthwash, mix a drop or two of peppermint oil to liven up the flavor and provide sweet-smelling breath.
Create a mixture of herbs with a teaspoon each of lavender, peppermint and rosemary leaves. Boil a cup of water and steep one teaspoon of the herbal mixture for about 10 to 20 minutes. Strain the herbal leaves and allow the herbal water to cool before using it as a mouthwash or rinsing agent.
Natural Toothpaste Options
Fresh strawberries have amazing cleaning powers when it comes to teeth and therefore is a good natural dental care tip. Slice a strawberry in half and rub your gums and teeth with the cut strawberry. Allow the strawberry to work its magic for about 15 minutes on your teeth before wetting your toothbrush and brushing your gums and teeth gently.
Rubbing lemon rind on your gums and teeth can remove tartar build-up and even some plaque deposits. The oils from the lemon are naturally antiseptic and will quash some of the germs harboring around your gum line.
Other Mouth Remedies
Canker sores can benefit from a few natural dental care tips. For instance, you can apply a few drops of oil of myrrh onto a canker sore to soothe the ache and promote healing. You may also wish to brew a cup of tea and use the cooled tea bag to press against the sore. The tannins and antioxidants in the tea bag also promote healing and provide soothing properties.
Toothaches, particularly those that strike when your dentist is unavailable, can be problematic. However one natural dental care tip using clove oil can be helpful. Soak a cotton ball in the clove oil and hold directly on the painful tooth. Cloves have natural anesthetic properties that will tone down or even numb the painful area.
Essential oils from herbs and other non-commercial remedies such as baking soda and green tea are important tools when it comes to oral hygiene. While over the counter dental care products can be helpful, consider a few natural dental care tips as well. You will have a healthier mouth.
