If you are feeling unhappy, and that unhappiness has lasted a while, what you may be experiencing is depression. Is this unhappiness or sadness that you feel? There is a difference. If you are suffering from depression, you may need to ask yourself if your job is causing your depression.

What Jobs are Likely to Cause Depression?
Recently, CNN reported the top ten jobs that are likely to cause depression. These jobs include nursing home and child care workers, food service staff, social workers, health care workers, artists, entertainers, and writers, teachers, administrative support staff, maintenance and ground workers, financial advisors, and sales people.
As you can see, all of these jobs are vastly different, but with the exception of artists, entertainers, and writers, administrative support staff, and maintenance and ground workers, they all involve working with the public. They are all service jobs, to an extent. Some of these jobs can bring about depression due to the fact that you are exposed to the hardships of life on a regular basis, while other problems seem to stem from low pay or irregular work or pay. More often than not, it is the stress associated with the type of work that you are doing that brings about the depression.
How to Determine if the Problem is Your Job
If you dread going to work, your job may be the issue. If you feel sad and depressed on work days, but your mood starts to improve on your days off, the job may be the issue.
Few people in this world are lucky enough to truly enjoy the work that they do. You have to determine whether it is a lack of joy, or true depression that is occurring. For this, professional help may be needed just to make this determination alone.
What to Do if Your Job is Causing Depression
If you discover that your job is causing depression, you must take action to remedy the situation. This does not necessarily mean changing jobs or careers, although it might. Seek professional help first. Your therapist should help you to find ways that you can find joy and meaning in your work, and help you to avoid depression that may result from the work that you do. You may need a support system, filled with other people in your field of work as well. If this fails, you may need to find a new job or career that doesn’t cause you so much stress and unhappiness.
