Is Sex Addiction Real or Just an Excuse?

Due to cheating celebrities, sex addiction has been getting a lot of press lately. What people want to know, however is if sex addiction is real or just an excuse? There are actually two answers to this.

Is Sex Addiction Real or Just an Excuse Is Sex Addiction Real or Just an Excuse?

Sex Addiction Isn’t Always Real

If a person will cheat, that same person will easily lie. What this means, in terms of sex addiction, is that the person could claim to have a sex addiction when they get caught cheating, so that they become a victim instead of a perpetrator. This, they feel, is their fastest road to being forgiven.

Unfortunately, they are lying. Unfortunately, you have to determine for yourself whether they are lying or not. If you are this persons romantic partner – and not the person that they got caught cheating with – you could easily determine whether an addiction actually occurs or not based on the amount of sex that they have with you. If there is a true addiction, they will want sex – from you – all the time. Sex addiction does not require the person to look elsewhere for sex, unless they are not getting all that they want from you.

Sex Addiction Can Be Real

You should know a person has a sex addiction – if they are your sexual partner – before they ever cheat. This is done in the same way that you can determine whether they are lying about having a sex addiction in the event that they get caught cheating.

If this person constantly wants sex from you, they probably have an addiction. If it seems that they are constantly thinking about sex, talking about sex, or looking for a sexual outlet, they probably have a sex addiction. Most true sex addicts will turn to pornography before turning to another sexual partner, for a while. Eventually, however, the pornography won’t be enough to satisfy their desire.

Can a Person Be Cured of a Sex Addiction?

As with any other type of addiction, a person can learn to control their urges with the right therapy. The key is in admitting that there is a problem, and truly wanting the help that is offered. If the person will not admit that there is a problem, or will only grudgingly admit that there is a problem and seek treatment in an effort to please you, without a true recognition that there is a problem, and a true desire for treatment, the treatment will not work. Most sex addicts will not admit that there is a problem or realistically seek treatment until they see that they are on the verge of losing everything that they currently have in terms of relationships.
