Both types of braces will straighten your teeth. For Invisalign to work you must follow the treatment plan developed by your dentist.  You can remove the Invisalign retainers for special occasions and to clean your teeth but you must wear it for it to work. With metal braces you have no choice but to follow the plan.

The Cost of Invisalign versus Braces

Traditional metal braces average cost is about $5000. Depending on how many Invisalign retainers you need to achieve the result you want the cost can range from $3500 to $10,000.  If you are on a budget or your dental insurance will not cover the cost of braces of either form you may need to consider the cost.

Comfort Factor of Invisalign versus Braces

Typically it has been reported that the use of Invisalign retainers is much more comfortable than traditional metal braces.

Metal braces generally have rough edges with metal brackets and wires that can irritate the gums. The addition of rubber bands adds more discomfort. Chewing and talking can be a challenge with metal braces. They can also be unattractive causing you social discomfort as well.

Invisalign are made from a thin clear material with smooth comfortable edges. These are retainers which is able to be removed when necessary.  Invisalign works to straighten your teeth from the back of your mouth forward which is reportedly less painful.

Some people have reported that they have had difficulty getting the first few aligners in and out of their mouth properly.  This is when a new retainer is used and they usually loosen up after a few days.  With both types of braces changes in speech have been reported and this usually resolves the more you practice speaking, you do after all have something in your mouth.

Hygiene with Invisalign versus Braces

Traditional metal braces can sometimes make it very difficult to clean and floss your teeth.  Furthermore after meals food particles become caught in the wires and brackets of your braces, which is not only embarrassing but unhealthy.

Invisalign retainers are removable and can be taken out to brush and floss your teeth thoroughly.  The retainer is easily washed and cleaned and easily placed back onto the teeth.
