Important Ingredients for Organic Baby Shampoo

You want your baby to be as healthy as possible, and you also want to raise your child in such a way that he or she is more aware of green alternatives than you were as a child. This starts by using all natural or organic products for your baby. You need to know about important ingredients for organic baby shampoo.

Why You Should Avoid Commercial Shampoos

Have you ever read the ingredients listed on the label of a bottle of shampoo? If you did, and you actually know what all of those long and hard to pronounce words are, you would probably dump your shampoo in the trash – quickly.

Those expensive – or cheap – shampoos may make your hair look, feel, and smell wonderful, but when you look at the fact that recent studies have shown that Sodium Laureth Sulfate, or SLES – a common ingredient in shampoo – contains carcinogens (which can cause cancer), you have to weigh the benefits against the risks involved. SLES isn’t the only ingredient in these shampoos that can lead to serious health consequences. Why would you put toxins on your child’s head?

How to Make Organic Baby Shampoo

To make organic baby shampoo, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Distilled Water – 1-1/2 cups
  • 1 Tbsp. Dried Rosemary or essential oil of rosemary, or another herb or essential oil of your choosing. This is for aroma.
  • 1 tsp. jojoba oil
  • ½ cup organic Castile Soap

Boil the water, and mix the ingredients in. Put the mixture in a bottle of your choice – squeeze bottles work best. The mixture can be refrigerated or left out, but if it lasts longer than a week, it will need to be refrigerated at that point.

Use Caution

Regardless of how natural an ingredient may be, babies have very sensitive skin, and some of these natural substances can actually cause irritation on the scalp and the skin. Do not add more than one essential oil to the mix until you know how your baby will react to it. Also try to avoid getting the shampoo in the baby’s eyes. The mix shouldn’t cause any problems if it does get in the eyes, but you should rinse them just to be on the safe side. If irritation occurs, see your doctor, and make sure that you inform him or her of the ingredients used, and the amounts used as well.
