Two Basic Types of Freckles

Freckles are simply pigment cells called melanin contained in the skin, they are not harmful and do not represent a health problem.  There are two basic types of freckles. Ephelide freckles are those that usually appear after sun exposure.  They are red or light brown in color.  These generally fade during the cooler winter months. Lentigine freckles are tan, brown or black spots that develop as a person ages due to sun exposure in earlier years of life.  Lentigines do not fade during winter months.

Medical Treatments to Remove Freckles

There are many treatments available to remove freckles and usually for the best results a combination of treatments are used.  Bleaching creams, fading creams and Retinoid are used to help lighten freckles.  They need to be used consistently and the process can take several months.  They are most effective when you avoid sun exposure while using them.

Chemical peels have been effective for treatment of irregular skin pigmentation and lightening the appearance of freckles. Laser treatments and photo facials can help decrease the appearance of freckles.  This is a safe and simple procedure performed in the dermatology office that has a low risk for scarring. Cryosurgery which is the use of liquid nitrogen to provide a light freezing of the freckle has some success, but all freckles do not always respond to freezing.

Home Remedies to Remove Freckles

Several home remedies are said to reduce the appearance of freckles.  The most common of them are the use of lemon juice.  You can simply apply the lemon juice to the area with your fingertips. Leave this for about 15 minutes then rinse it away and apply a moisturizer because lemon juice will tend to dry out your skin.  You should avoid sun exposure after application.

Sour milk has been used to remove freckles due to the lactic acid it contains.  This acts like a chemical peel and is frequently used in combination with the lemon juice treatment.

Other mask treatments are made with fruits and vegetables such as mashed apricots, strawberries or cucumbers.  When using these masks you do not thoroughly rinse however, you remove them with a gentle cloth or tissue and apply a non chemical moisturizer.

To help conceal freckles while you are working to fade them you can make a mixture of equal parts of natural parsley juice or parsley infusion, orange juice, lemon juice and red currant juice to apply under your moisturizing cream.
