How to Prevent Oily Skin Problems

Most people view oily skin as an inconvenience more than a problem, but for many people it is a condition that creates numerous problems. The most widely known oil skin problem is acne, but there are other problems as well, such as damage to the self esteem and self confidence that people with acne tend to suffer.

Fortunately, no matter how old you are, what your sex is, or how oily your skin may be, there are some steps that you can take to prevent oily skin problems, including acne. Teenagers are most commonly affected with overly oily skin, but women also experience oily skin longer than men do in their lifetimes, due to hormonal changes.

Oily skin Problems and Age

The first thing to realize is that you will most likely outgrow oily skin. As you age, your body stops producing as much sebum. Sebum is the oil that you find on your skin, and as that production is diminished with age, your skin will actually start to become dry, as opposed to oily.

Most people who have oily skin that is oily enough to cause problems are teenagers. Unfortunately, despite knowing that they will outgrow this oily skin, the problems that are associated with oily skin can do a great deal of damage to the self esteem – and they simply cannot wait to outgrow it. Action must be taken, and while oily skin usually does go away with age, it doesn’t always happen. Some people deal with overly oily skin for their entire lives.

Western Medical Treatments for Oily Skin Problems

While common hygiene practices and natural remedies for oily skin problems should be used first, you should note that you can talk to your doctor about your oily skin. In many cases, you will be referred to a dermatologist for further treatment of this condition, but only if the condition is severe.

Most dermatologists and doctors will first recommend the use of over-the-counter products. You may be surprised to find, however that they do not suggest harsh cleansers, as harsh cleansers can actually cause your skin to produce more oil. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is one of the medications that are often recommended, and this is found in a number of over-the-counter acne treatments. These treatments will help to dry up some of the oil that your body is producing, even if you do not have acne.

Other over-the-counter medications that are recommended will contain Salicylic Acid or Glycolic Acid. Both of these chemicals will actually help to reduce the production of sebum. Sometimes, however, over-the-counter treatments do not work; in which case you may need something more potent, such as Retin A. Accutane is another popular prescription treatment for acne and oily skin. In fact, most experts agree that Accutane is the best product available for fighting acne and oily skin today.

Natural Remedies to Prevent Oily Skin Problems

Surprisingly, a good moisturizer is often recommended for people who have oily skin. We mistakenly think that if we want to reduce oil production, we shouldn’t be adding to the problem. The truth of the matter is that a moisturizer does not contribute to the oily skin at all. Instead, it may actually reduce the amount of oil that your body is producing – and there is a vast difference between the oil that the body produces and a moisturizer.

Although it isn’t widely recommended, plain old rubbing alcohol does wonders for drying up the oil that your body is producing, but it also has the potential to dry out the skin far too much.

You can use cosmetics that are designated as ‘anti-shine.’ Be aware, however, that these products just offer a temporary solution, and do nothing to actually reduce the production of sebum, and in some cases, cosmetics can actually add to the oily skin problems that you experience.

The best way to prevent oily skin problems, however, is to prevent oily skin. This can be done by cleansing your face several times a day with a gentle cleanser, keeping your hands and hair off of your face, and by eating a healthy diet of vegetables and fruits. It is important to realize that your skin often reacts to the environment, and this may mean that you need a different cleanser for warm weather and for cold weather.

Clay and mud are great for dealing with oily skin, and while there are many products available over-the-counter that contain clay and mud, you really can collect your own clay or mud for a natural facial designed to reduce the amount of oil on the surface of the skin.

Although we are constantly warned about the dangers of the sun, it is also interesting to note that sunshine offers the most natural solution of all for oily skin problems. It is essential that you realize that oily hair usually accompanies oily hair, and you will need to take measures to reduce the amount of oil in your hair as well, without drying your hair out.

I’m one of those people who didn’t grow out of oily skin. I keep hoping it will happen! But I’m 33 and just as oily as when I was a teen. One of the best products I found is Mattify Loose Powder from Mattify Cosmetics. I put it on before my liquid makeup and it helps stop the oil for about 4 hours. That’s a long time for me! I’ve noticed that my eating habits have very little to do with oil production. Whether I eat healthy or bad, its just as oily. Face scrub makes a difference though. You have to exfoliate daily or oil clogs the pores. Using a wash with salicylic acid keeps pores clean too.
