How to Make Flavored Rice

Rice is a staple that is found in most kitchens. This is probably because it is inexpensive, and it goes well with just about any type of meat that you wish to cook. It can even be good for you, in terms of health, if you prepare it right. Unfortunately, that is where the virtues of rice end. Rice, after all, is rather boring. You can spice it up, however, when you learn how to make flavored rice.

The Easiest Way to Make Flavored Rice

The easiest way to make flavored rice is with herbal seasonings. You can add just about any herb seasoning that you desire. Add rosemary, Italian seasoning, thyme, or anything else that you think may taste good. This should typically be added to the rice and water when you begin cooking it, so that the flavor really soaks in good.

You can also add some fresh herbs, such as onion and garlic. It is best, however, to sauté these herbs before adding them to the rice, and they shouldn’t be added until the rice is done if you are using this method. Allow the rice to sit for a few minutes, with the cover on the pot, before serving so that the flavor has time to penetrate the rice.

Another Method for Making Flavored Rice

Another great method for making flavored rice is to add chicken broth or beef broth in lieu of some of the water. For example, when you are making rice from scratch, you typically add two cups of water for each cup of rice. Instead, you could add a cup of water and a cup of broth to the water.

If you want a stronger beef or chicken flavor for the rice, you can add more broth, and less water. Additionally, you can dilute some soups that come in cream form, such as Cream of Mushroom or Cream of Chicken, and use that for flavoring.

Add Butter for Flavor

If you don’t necessarily want a meat flavoring in your rice, or an herb flavor, try adding just a bit of butter or oleo to the rice as soon as it is done. Additionally, you can add a bit of grated cheese or parmesan cheese. Just be careful not to add too much butter, as this does make the rice less healthy – and it can get too watery or buttery if you aren’t careful. You don’t want the flavoring to completely take over the rice.
