How to Live a Happier Life

Regardless of what the circumstances are in your life, you have the right and the ability to live a happy life. In fact, there are three vital secrets to happiness that few people ever fully realize in their lives. This is probably because the way to live a happier life is so simple that most people simply cannot see it in front of them. We think that happiness is something elusive and out of reach, or that we can only be happy if we obtain certain items or reach certain goals, which is absolutely wrong.

Decide What Happy Means to You

First, you need to know what happy means to you. Each person’s definition of happy is different – and usually wrong. For example, if you think that happiness means having a lot of money, and you eventually get a lot of money, you will find that money brings its own set of problems, and that the happiness that you thought you would find still isn’t there.

This is because happiness cannot be found in things or in money. Happiness cannot even be found in other people. Happiness can only be found inside of your own heart and mind. It’s already there – you just haven’t tapped into it yet. This is true whether you are rich or poor, healthy or unhealthy, married or single, or educated or uneducated. Happiness is there for the taking if you want it.

Decide to Be Happy

The most important key to happiness is to decide to be happy. Regardless of what is going on in your life, you can be happy. Happiness is a feeling. It isn’t a thing or a place. You cannot touch it – and nobody else can touch it or take it away from you unless you allow them to.

You simply have to decide to feel happy. You have to decide to stop worrying about the things that you cannot control – which is the greatest source of unhappiness in the world. Realize that the only thing in this world that you have any true level of control over is yourself – and your happiness.

Never Allow Others to Control Your Happiness

You have found happiness, and you arrive at work. Your coworker is grumpy and having a bad day. It could be that your boss calls you into the office and talks down to you. It could be that your spouse wants to pick a fight. You instantly lose your happiness. You have just allowed someone else to control you.

Realize immediately that they have not found their own happiness. Apologize if you have done something that warrants an apology, tell them that you hope their day improves, and move on, whistling your happy tune in your head as you go. Never allow anyone to control your happiness. This takes some practice, but it works.
