How to Deal with Your Own Depression and Sadness
Dealing with your own depression and sadness is difficult to do without help. In fact, dealing with it generally means seeking help – even if you just seek out a close friend to talk to about what is going on with you. Let someone know how you are feeling, and make sure that it is someone who genuinely cares about you.
This doesn’t mean that you are putting it off on someone else. It means that you are calling on someone close to you to help you get through it. This person should also be able to help you determine whether or not you need professional help. Other than this, try to keep going. Develop a routine that you can handle, and try to cut some of the stress out of your life. Do not allow yourself to stay in bed all day, or to stay in your housecoat all day. Try to continue on in the most normal manner that you can, without any added stress.
How to Deal with a Loved Ones Depression and Sadness
You must use caution when dealing with a depressed loved one. First, the depression can be contagious if you aren’t careful – especially if you are the type of person who is greatly affected by the mood of the people around you. Protect yourself from this.
The second thing you need to be aware of is that you are not qualified to offer counseling if it is needed, unless of course you are trained and licensed in that field. If you are trained and licensed in that field, you already know that it is best not to treat those who are close to you in terms of your relationship with them.
With that said, try to get the person to talk to you and tell you what is wrong. Remember that you are not trying to dig down into their psyche. Instead, you are trying to find out what could be causing the depression or sadness – if there is a reason for it. Often, finding the reason means finding the cure without any further help needed. From there, if you feel that the person needs help, set up an appointment with their doctor for them, and drive them there.
Seeking Professional Help
If depression or sadness lasts for more than two weeks, it is time to seek professional help. Start by visiting your medical doctor. He or she can help to determine whether something physical is causing the problem, if the situation is most likely temporary, and if you will benefit from anti-depressants or not.
He or she will also help you to determine if counseling or therapy is needed for your situation. You need to talk to your doctor openly and honestly about what is going on in your life to help him or her make this determination with you.
