No sound could be more disturbing to a parent than a crying baby. This is your baby’s way of communicating with you. He or she is telling you that all is not right in his or her world, and that something is needed. Unfortunately, it is up to you to figure out what is wrong, and you need to know how to comfort crying babies.

Check Physical Comfort Issues
The first thing you should do is to check your baby’s physical comfort. Does she need to be changed? Is he hungry? Are his or her clothes possibly causing discomfort? Is he too warm or too cool? Is she sleepy? Has the baby been lying in the same position for too long?
Usually when a baby cries, it is because of a physical discomfort of some type, which can easily be rectified. However, it could be that your baby doesn’t feel well. Does the baby have fever? Is his nose runny or stuffy? Make sure that the baby isn’t ill or uncomfortable.
Give Emotional Comfort
It could be that your baby’s discomfort is emotional. Even little baby’s can experience fear or unhappiness. He or she may just need to hear the sound of your voice. He may just need to feel a physical closeness to you, and need to be picked up and held for a while. If the baby has been held for sometime, he or she may want to be put down and left alone for a while.
The baby could be picking up on emotions or tensions that you are experiencing as well. Babies are fairly intuitive that way, and if you are upset, the chances are good that your baby will become upset as well. Evaluate your own mental state, and make adjustments and see if this makes a difference.
Is Your Child Simply Bored?
Your baby could be bored. Your baby could just want to hear noise. A fussy baby can be exhausting, but the fussiness will pass with time, as long as all other comforts have been addressed. If you’ve made absolutely certain that there is no illness, no physical discomfort, and no emotional distress, try entertaining your baby. Sing to him, talk to him. Clap your hands softly and make funny faces. Distract the baby from his or her tears, and continue to entertain the baby until he or she is ready to eat again or sleep again, and you won’t have to listen to the baby cry, in most cases.
If nothing seems to be working, call the pediatrician and make an appointment. There could be some physical discomfort that you cannot easily figure out without a medical evaluation.
