How To Build More Self-Esteem: The Good Versus The Bad

What Is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is the way that we see ourselves. Generally people have high self-esteem or low self-esteem. For people with low self-esteem it is important to build more self-esteem. Where does self-esteem start? It starts when we are young and is built as we grow. If we are raised in a negative environment then we will probably have low self-esteem. If we are raised in a positive, loving and caring environment we will have high self-esteem.

People with high self-esteem were raised in an environment where they were being praised, being listened too, being spoken to respectfully, got a lot of attention and hugs, succeeded in school and sports, and had trustworthy friends. As opposed to people with low self-esteem that may have been raised being criticized harshly, being yelled at or beaten, being ignored, ridiculed or teased, being expected to be perfect, and often failed in sports and school.

Low self-esteem can create anxiety, stress, loneliness, are likely to be depressed, it can also lead to problems between friends and other relationships, it can affect your job performance, and it can lead to drug and alcohol abuse.

So How Can People With Low Self-Esteem Build More Self-Esteem?

There are three ways: First you must rebut your inner voice, Second you practice self-nurturing, and third you get help from others.

First rebut your inner voice. You have to have a come back line for your inner voice. For example when your inner voice tells you that you are stupid and you will never get it right. You say something like I am smart and if I practice I can get it right. If your inner voice says she is way out of your league. You say something like I am just as good as anyone else if she don’t want to go out with me it’s not my fault. The point is you have to control your thoughts and when you get a negative thought distinguish it with a positive thought.

The second way to build more self-esteem is to practice self-nurturing. To do this you can practice basic self care, like get plenty of sleep, regular exercise, and good hygiene. You should plan relaxing things for yourself like going to a movie, taking a nap, buy a pet, or whatever else you may like to do. Reward yourself when you reach a goal, since you passed that math test take a night off with your friends. Remind yourself of what you like about yourself, make a list of all of your good qualities. When you are not able to reach your goals don’t be critical of yourself instead forgive yourself.

And Finally get help from others to help build more self-esteem. Get your friends to tell you what they like about you. Find someone who cares about you that will allow you to “vent” for a little while so that you can improve your self-esteem. It is okay to ask for a hug when you feel like you need one. And ask someone that loves you to remind you that they do.
