How to Be Positive

It can be frustrating sometimes when someone tells you to be positive, especially when it seems like nothing is going your way. Sometimes it is the last thing anyone wants to hear, and yet there are relatively simple steps to remaining positive. It is especially important to change one’s outlook sometimes to help ward of depression which can have serious repercussions.

The truth is, things really are never as bad as they seem. Failure to be positive usually has nothing to do with personality, although it can play a role. It is largely due to circumstances and anyone can fall prey to negative feelings. Here are some tips for remaining positive, even when things seem to be going downhill:

  • Keep a diary: Believe it or not, chronicling your thoughts can sometimes be cathartic. It is easier to put what you feel into perspective when you put them down and take the time to consider them objectively. The act of writing may just lift your spirits as well.
  • Take a second look: Taking the time to properly explore the problem can make it clear that it is not insurmountable. If you are feeling dejected about where your life is going, examine ways to do something different such as joining a group or taking classes.
  • Choose your words: The way you describe a situation can impact the way you deal with it. Is it really impossible or should you try something different.
  • Don’t think small: Sometimes it is the little things that get to us, but clear thought will help you realize that they are not worth your peace of mind. Focus on more important things and you will develop a more positive train of thought.
  • Make quality time: Spending more time with family and friends can help to keep negative thoughts at bay. Rather that dwell on things that aren’t going well go see a movie or do some other activity.
  • Fall back on your faith: For many people their faith is a source of inspiration. Also being around your friends in church who genuinely mean you well can help a great deal.

The way you view problems is dependent on you. If you have difficulty remaining positive, try to avoid people who are overly negative. Being around people who view things in a negative way will only help to bring you down. It is not impossible to get a handle on what you feel, but in some cases it may take a while. Give yourself some credit for the good things in your life and chalk up the negatives to bad luck. Go about finding ways of making your own good luck. Being positive is not about changing yourself, just changing your focus.
