The Lemonade diet has a successful track record of over three decades. It was first introduced in a book called “Fasting: The Ultimate Diet” which was written by Allan Cott, M.D. and published in 1975. The Lemonade diet gained rapid popularity as more and more Hollywood celebrities began using it and then publicly announcing their astounding weight losses and improved health outcomes. In addition, the New England Journal of Medicine endorsed the Lemonade diet with the following statement which was printed on the book’s front cover: “Fasting is a valid experience. It can benefit any otherwise healthy person whose calories now have the upper hand in his/her life.” This prominently displayed endorsement convinced skeptics of the Lemonade diet’s validity and many began using it as well.

How Does the Lemonade Diet Work?

The Lemonade diet, which is also known as the Master Cleanse, is essentially a fast as people participating in this diet are consuming no food for its entire duration. The intent here is to cleanse the body and rid it of all its impurities and toxins in order to promote a quicker and more effective process of weight loss and health gain.

The lemonade in the Lemonade diet is not the same lemonade you and I are all familiar with because it is comprised of lemon juice, purified water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Participants in the Lemonade diet are required to abstain from ingesting anything other than this unusual lemonade blend throughout the day and a laxative tea in the evening. This rigid routine is usually sustained for anywhere between ten to forty days.

Participants who follow the Lemonade diet exactly as it is presented will lose weight for two main reasons.

• First of all, they are introducing close to zero number of calories into their daily lives while their bodies continue to metabolize the stored reserves to sustain and fuel their essential functions. This means that fat is being burned and weight is, therefore, lost.
• Secondly, with the help of the laxative properties of the lemonade blend in addition to the laxative tea, the body will eliminate more than it normally does, and this will also account for weight lose.

The Lemonade Diet and Detoxification

Daily, our bodies take in toxins and pollutants such as pesticides, preservatives and other compound contaminates from the processed foods we eat as part of our unhealthful dietary habits. Our bodies have self cleansing systems which continually work hard to eliminate all the toxins and metabolic wastes that they can. However, even in the best case scenarios of healthy systems, if we put in more toxins at faster rates than our bodies can dispose of, we get backed up as more and more blockages occur. This does not only retard the weight loss process, but it also leads to the development of many health issues.

On the one hand, the fasting aspect of the Lemonade diet provides our bodies with an environment in which it can continue to cleanse itself of toxins without having to deal with newly introduces ones. On the other hand, the laxatives of the lemonade and the tea help the elimination process along.

Depending on the participants’ fitness levels, their overall health and their lifestyles; the Lemonade diet can result in of loss of between 20 and 35 pounds in a ten day period. On an average, this translates to a loss of between 2 to 3.5 pounds per day, with the first day’s loss being the highest at around 5 pounds.

  • A lemonade diet done for 10 to 40 days gives amazing results. What we need for a lemonade diet is, of course, fresh lemonade juice, pure and non-fluoridated water, maple syrup of grade B, and last, cayenne pepper. Some 8 or 9 glasses of pure water and peppermint tea may also supplement this diet and help supress feeling hungry when on this diet.
