If you ever intend to have a child, this is something that you may want to think about before you ever experiment with any drug. If you are considering the use of marijuana, or you are already using marijuana, you need to know how does marijuana effect fertility?

The Effects of Marijuana on Female Fertility
For males and females alike, marijuana has been proven to temporarily decrease fertility, and to possibly cause you to become completely infertile for a period of time. With extended use of marijuana, or use as a teenager, there is also the possibility that this infertility could become permanent.
Aside from fertility, there is also the danger of smoking or consuming marijuana in any form when a woman is pregnant. Like other substances, marijuana does cross the placenta, which means that if you are consuming marijuana, your baby is consuming marijuana as well. This can lead to premature birth, low birth weight, and addiction at birth.
The Effects of Marijuana on Male Fertility
In males, the use of marijuana actually blocks sperm mobility. This in turn reduces the sperm count, which lowers fertility. Marijuana also decreases the amount of semen that a man produces, which also adds to the fertility issue.
While this reduces fertility, fertility can also be completely diminished with the use of marijuana, in that it actually speeds the sperm up, causing it to burn out or die before it reaches its intended destination. Many men who use marijuana on a regular basis are also more likely to experience complete impotence or weak erections.
Are the Effects of Marijuana on Fertility Permanent?
Overall, it is believed that casual users of marijuana are only limiting their fertility on a temporary basis. In most of these cases, the infertility only lasts for about thirty days after smoking marijuana. There are instances, however, where long term use of marijuana or heavy long term use of marijuana can create permanent fertility issues.
The fact is, there is no way of knowing how much damage you are doing to your reproductive system when you use marijuana – regardless of how much you use it – because of the fact that the drugs remain in your system for at least thirty days. Any drugs that you take could have the same effect, and this is a good argument for avoiding illegal drug use altogether, and for getting as much information as possible before taking any prescription drugs.
