There are many causes of sadness. Typically sadness occurs because something has happened in our lives. This could be the loss of a job, the loss of a loved one, the breakup of a relationship, financial problems, or more. Regardless of the cause of sadness, you need to know how damaging sadness can be to your health.

Your Emotions Affect Your Health
It took many decades of medical research to fully determine that our moods and emotions affect our physical health – and that our physical health can negatively impact our emotions and our mental health.
Thankfully, this is now a recognized fact in the medical profession, and your doctor can work with your emotional state to improve your physical state – or at least offer suggestions. Doctors are now trained to not only enquire about a patients emotional state, but also to recognize the signs of depression and sadness even when the patient doesn’t say anything about it.
How Sadness Affects Your Health
Sadness or depression can cause back pain, chest pain, constipation, diarrhea, dry mouth, fatigue, aches, pains, headaches, insomnia, heart palpitations, stiffness, upset stomach, high blood pressure, and light headedness.
Sadness can also affect your appetite, which has a direct impact on your health. This could cause you to gain too much weight or lose too much weight. You may also experience sexual problems, and suddenly start having anxiety attacks, or the symptoms of anxiety attacks. Sadness has an impact on your overall emotional health, as much as it affects your physical health.
Talking to Your Doctor about Sadness
Talking about our emotions with someone that we don’t have regular deep conversations with is difficult, but it is essential that you talk to your doctor concerning prolonged sadness – preferably before it has too great of an impact on your emotional or physical health.
There are many options that you and your doctor can try to reduce sadness, or at the very least to prevent the sadness from affecting your emotional and physical health. This includes therapy, exercise, and medications when they are needed.
Often, when the sadness goes away, the health condition that sadness causes will also go away, but there are some cases where enough damage has been done to the body that there is no hope of complete recovery. This is why it is so important to seek medical help as soon as possible – for your emotional health and your physical health.
