Homemade Acne Treatments

As much as we probably don’t like to admit it, we do notice when someone we’re interacting with has acne.  And, when I’ve been the one to have that noticeable pimple or blemish I feel like it is sticking out like a sore thumb and would do anything to get rid of it.

acne treatmentThe most common form of acne is acne vulgaris and it affects millions of people worldwide. Acne develops after hair follicles in the skin become “plugged” by excess oil and excessive shedding of cells in the hair shaft.  This results in the formation of whiteheads, blackheads and pustules that characterize acne.  These lesions are often times painful and appear inflamed, irritated, and swollen.

As much as we would like to go out and try any acne product on the market to rid ourselves of this sightly disease, there are remedies right in your own home that may work out just as well as the most expensive product out there and not be as harsh on our skin.

Homemade Acne Products

These products include:

• Toothpaste – probably the most well known home remedy. Apply a small amount of paste to the affected area at bedtime then wash in the morning to help dry out lesions

• Cornstarch – has a drying effect on oily skin. Just mix cornstarch with water to create a mask that can be applied then rinsed off

• Aloe Vera Juice – provides a calming, soothing effect to inflamed and irritated skin. Apply two times a day to the affected area. Consider buying a small aloe vera plant for your home so that you can have a continuous fresh source to use.

• Cucumbers – grated cucumber applied to your face, eyes and neck for several minutes for preventative purposes can do wonders for your complexion

• Oranges – peel the orange and pound the peel with water.  Apply at bedtime and wash in the morning with warm water

• Honey and Cinnamon – like cornstarch, honey and cinnamon also dry out oily skin.  Mix a small amount of honey (3 tablespoons) with cinnamon to create a mixture that can be applied directly to pimples. Apply at bedtime then wash in the morning with warm water

• Fenugreek Leaves – make a paste from the leaves and apply a thin layer at bedtime for preventive measures. Wash off in the morning with warm water

• Garlic Clove – apply a small amount of garlic directly to the acne lesion twice daily to help decrease irritation and inflammation

In addition to trying a homemade product, remember to focus on hydrating your skin which helps flush out toxins and keep’s skin cells moist.
