Herbal Remedies for Sleep

For many who have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep herbal remedies for sleep may be the answer.  Since herbal remedies are natural, they are generally a safe and effective way to help improve sleep patterns. Several popular herbal remedies include herbs such as valerian, lavender and chamomile.

Some herbal remedies may not work instantly and need to be taken for a few days to get the benefits.  All herbs are not the same; you may need to try several to find the one that will meet your needs.  Before adding any herbs to your regimen please check with your health provider for approval especially if you are currently taking any prescription medication or if you have chronic medical conditions.

Valerian

Valerian has been used for centuries to treat sleep disturbances by those in India, Greece and China.  It is grown in North America and Europe.  The benefits for sleep are found in the root of the herb.  This herb offers a sedative benefit which helps to calm the nerves which benefit sleep.  It is sold in either tablet or capsule form and is taken just prior to going to bed.

Lavender

Originally only found in Mediterranean regions, the lavender plant is now grown across the world.  The effects are calming and relaxing and useful in many aspects.  The purple flowers it produces are often used to brew lavender tea which is consumed prior to going to sleep.  Another use of the flowers is to that they are often distilled into oil which can be used topically to provide relaxation to the muscles or for the aromatic relaxing effects.  The oil is also used in a hot bath for muscle relaxing and aromatherapy effects.  Lavender can also be dried and used in a sachet placed under the pillow or inside the pillowcase to provide a relaxing aromatherapy while drifting off to sleep.  Lavender is becoming very popular and sold in bath beads, body washes and shampoos as well.

Chamomile

Grown in the warm climates of North America, Europe, Asia and Australia the Chamomile plant produces yellow flowers that have a calming effect and are very helpful in relieving stress.  It can be used in many ways such as in lotions, creams, essential oils the most beneficial way to use chamomile for sleep is in the form of a tea.  The leaves and flowers of the plant are dried and packaged for the purpose of brewing tea and can be purchased in your local grocery store.
