A healthy tan is absolutely beautiful, but these days, we have numerous fears concerning tanning. Once thought to be safe, many of us avoid the sun completely now in favor of tanning beds. Now we know that tanning beds can be just as dangerous as the sun if they are not used properly. You can still obtain a great tan and be safe, if you use healthy tanning tips.

Outdoor Tanning Tips
Never stay outdoors in the sun without some level of sunscreen. If tanning is your purpose, use a low SPF tanning cream. Make sure that you get your fill of sunshine before noon during the hot summer months, as the sun reaches its strongest points after this time, which can cause damage to your skin even with a low SPF sunscreen.
It is also a good idea to shower before sun tanning outdoors. This removes any perfume or makeup that may make you more susceptible to the sun. Also avoid shaving your legs or face right before spending time in the sun. Shaving actually removes some of the top layer of your skin, exposing more sensitive skin.
Indoor Tanning Tips
Just as you apply a low SPF sunscreen before venturing outdoors, you need to pay special attention to the wattage of the UVB lamp that is used in your tanning bed. Use a low UVB, or Ultraviolet Type B bulb. You need to use a good tanning lotion as well, and that lotion should contain Dehydroxy Acetone, or DHA.
Often, we feel more comfortable exposing more skin in a tanning bed, but this can be quite dangerous. Certain areas of your body may have never actually been exposed to UV rays. If you do expose these areas, don’t stay in the tanning bed for more than five minutes. Allow that skin to brown slowly.
Things to Avoid When Tanning
Never tan outdoors without using sunscreen. It is true that this means that it takes longer to tan, but in the end, you will protect your skin from damage from the sun. Also learn to stop tanning when you are tanned enough. Tanning can actually become quite addictive.
If you are tanning indoors, with a tanning bed, never stay in the bed for more than ten or fifteen minutes at a time, and do not tan everyday. Two to three times a week is plenty, and there should be at least two days between tanning sessions regardless of whether you are tanning indoors or outdoors.
