Health Effects of Heroin

Heroin is one of if not the most dangerous drugs known today.  Heroin addiction affects people of every walk of life and cares nothing about gender, race, or social status.  It is highly addictive and causes extreme side effects, painful and dangerous withdrawal symptoms all of which can end in death.  This drug is not a casual drug and its use leads to addiction and destruction of the health of the addict.  The damage to your health from heroin use can lead to a huge array of health conditions as the use continues and in many cases it will lead to death.

Short Term Health Effects of Heroin

The most common short term effects recorded include hallucinations, tendencies toward violent behaviors, severe headaches, muscle twitching and loss of control of body movement.  Mental confusion and decreased mental function, nausea and vomiting, decreased immune system and inability to fight infections, respiratory difficulties and ulcerations or rashes on the skin.

Long Term Health Effects of Heroin

Long term health effects of heroin use include venous problems such as collapsed veins, blood clots and serious even deadly infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis.  Heroin reaches the blood brain barrier where it stops blood flow; as a result the brain shuts down mental processes such as thought, logic and reasoning.  The brain also loses the ability to control the functions of the body.  Other long term effects include damage to the circulatory, respiratory and central nervous system.

Health Effects of Heroin can be Deadly

Heroin can affect the health of the body in a variety of ways.  It can lead to the shutdown of many organs and systems.  Infections are not able to be overcome due to the decrease of immune function and due to the frequent sharing of needles many diseases are passed from one addict to another.  Impurities used in the processing of heroin can lead to increased risk for infection, clots and damage to the body.

Many people do not realize that heroin is such a dangerous and addictive drug and that addiction or death can occur with the first contact.  Every day more people are trying this illicit drug for what they think will be a casual recreational use only to fast become addicted to it.  As they begin to use it their body requires more of the drug to achieve the same ‘high’ and to avoid the painful effects of withdrawal pulling them down into the funnel of self destruction.
