Gastritis And Its Treatment

Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining and the gastritis treatment involves a healthy diet. It can occur suddenly (acute gastritis) or gradually (chronic gastritis). Gastritis may be caused by many factors including infections, an irritant, an autoimmune disorder (disorders caused by the body immune response against its own tissues) or a “backup” copy of the stomach ball (bile reflux). As in the case of ulcer, the gastritis is considered to arise because of an imbalance between the aggressive factors (acid, pepsin) and the defense of the gastric mucosa (mucus, bicarbonate).

Helicobacter pylori infection is an important factor involved in the gastritis development . In most cases, gastritis does not do permanent damage to the stomach lining and sometimes the cause of inflammation cannot be identified. The stomach lining may be substantially affected in some of the severe cases, leading to sores (peptic ulcers) in the stomach or the first part of the small intestine. These ulcers can lead to bleeding if left untreated.

Signs And Symptoms Of The Gastritis

The most common symptoms of the gastritis are the annoying stomach pains. The stomach pains are exacerbated by the copious meals based on heavy, fried or stimulating foods. The possible symptoms are:

  • Indigestion (also called dyspepsia)
  • Burning sensation in the upper abdomen, called heartburn
  • Abdominal pain, chest pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting, possibly with blood or material that looks like coffee
  • Dark stools

What Can Cause Irritation Or Gastritis?

  • Gastritis may be caused  by the long-term medication, prolonged use of aspirin, ibuprofen or other anti-inflammatory
  • Alcohol abuse may lead to the emergence of gastritis
  • Smoking
  • Coffee and acidic beverages
  • The excess of the stomach acid (secreted even from stress) is a factor leading to the appearance of gastritis

The Diagnosis Of Gastritis

The diagnosis of the gastritis is given after a series of tests. These include endoscopy of the stomach – a thin tube with a light and a video camera is inserted into the neck to the end of stomach. This test allows the doctor to see the stomach and, if necessary, take samples (biopsy). The laboratory tests that you may need depend on the causes that lead to gastritis.

Gastritis Prevention

You need to make lifestyle changes if you want to get rid of gastritis. A first decision would be a to avoid on the long-term any irritant (like aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, coffee or alcohol). A healthy lifestyle will help prevent the gastritis and its complications (such as a peptic ulcer). This condition is directly influenced by stress and the stress reduction can only be beneficial in the gastritis treatment. Use various relaxation techniques: long walks, yoga, meditation, listen to music and spend time at home, possibly cooking healthier dishes.

The gastritis treatment varies according to the causes of the problem. Some causes of the gastritis may resolve themselves in time. Gastritis may disappear in a short time after we give up on the ingested irritants, such as alcohol, tobacco, aspirin or other anti-inflammatory drugs. However, always consult a specialist if you suspect yourself of having gastritis.
