We have all heard the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” but does that saying hold true for other things too? Can a glass of wine a day keep the doctor away? It would seem that a lot of studies have answered that question, and the answer is yes. Different kinds of wine have been proven to provide certain benefits for the body and your overall health. Read more into this article to find out how wine can help you become healthier with just a glass of wine a day.
A Glass for Your Heart
Recent studies have proven that it is not just red wines that can help to improve your cardiovascular health, but other kinds of wine as well. Even with other wines offering some benefits for your heart, nothing can beat the amount of antioxidants found in a normal-sized glass of red wine. A nice pinot noir or cabernet sauvignon contains a large dose of antioxidants that come from the red skins of the grapes. Wine has been proven to help raise the good cholesterol in your body, or HDL cholesterol, as well as preventing the bad cholesterol, or LDL cholesterol for building up. Red wines, and other wines to a much less degree, have been proven to help increase circulation and reduce the chance of a dangerous clot forming in your blood vessels.
Cancer Prevention
As already mentioned, most wines, red wines in particular, have antioxidants that come from the skins of the grapes that are used to make the wine. Antioxidants help the body to not absorb free-radicals that come from other foods and lifestyle choices that have the potential to cause cancer. Experts have studied individuals who consumer moderate amounts of wine on a regular basis and have found that they are less likely to develop certain kinds of cancer.
Trim Your Waistline
If you have ever wondered why some French women can maintain such a small waistline you will be able to find part of the answer in wine. For some reason, individuals who consume win in moderate amounts and on a regular basis have smaller waistlines than other individuals who consume either too much too frequently or consume on a less frequent basis. Keeping your weight down can help reduce the chance that you will develop weight-related illnesses such as diabetes and some forms of heart disease.
Always in Moderation
As with all kinds of foods and beverages, overconsumption of wine is not encouraged. For people who are looking to enjoy the health benefits from drinking wine it is recommend that women drink only one 4 ounce glass per day and men have no more than two 4 ounce glasses of wine per day. Drinking more than that will mean that you are consuming excess calories, which can contribute to weight gain. Additionally, overconsumption of alcoholic beverages can damage your liver. Wine consumption is definitely one of those situations where less is more.
