Do you use herbs and herbal supplements in an attempt to improve your health? Are you taking medications, or heart medications, that are prescribed by your doctor? If so, those supplements that are designed to improve your health may be doing more harm than good.

Are All Herbs Dangerous for Heart Patients?
Not all herbs are dangerous for heart patients, and not all heart conditions are subject to the need to dispense with the use of certain herbs. For example, heart patients who are taking Warfarin should avoid fish oil, glucosamine, chondroitin, coenzyme Q10 and multivitamins according to a new survey conducted in Utah, through the Intermountain Medical Center in Salt Lake City.
The biggest danger is our newfound desire to take charge of our own medical care – we’ve come to rely less on advice from doctors for a wide range of reasons, and therefore, our doctors seldom know about the other remedies we are trying along with medication that is prescribed.
Is There a Difference Between Herbs and Herbal Supplements?
There is a difference between fresh herbs and herbal supplements. Obviously, fresh herbs are more natural than supplements, which have been processed. In some cases, the supplements are the thing to avoid, and not necessarily the herbs that are used in the supplement.
This is why it is vital that you talk to your doctor about the herbs and supplements that you are trying out when you are taking heart medication – before you try those herbs or supplements.
What About Other Medications?
You need one doctor, and if additional doctors or specialists are needed, they all need to be in communication with each other. Mixing certain medications can be deadly, and medications other than heart medications can also be affected with the use of herbs or supplements. Your doctors should know everything that you are taking, including natural supplements.
Do not wait for your doctor to ask you about supplements. Most won’t ask the question unless you bring it up, and nobody seems to know why this is, considering the dangers associated with supplements mixed with medications. Make sure that you still are in charge of your healthcare, and that you bring this topic up with your doctor without prompting.
