The effects that alcohol has on the physical and emotional wellness of the human body have been proven by scientific research.  These effects have shown to result in increased incidence and increased risk of acne in both men and women.  Studies have shown that the use of alcohol can cause acne.

The Effect of Alcohol on Hormones Related to Acne

Consuming alcohol results in an increase of testosterone and estrogen levels in the body.  Testosterone and estrogen are hormones which trigger the sebaceous glands of the body to secrete excessive sebum.  Sebum is the substance that causes the clogs in the pores which results in skin breakouts of pimples, blackheads and acne.  Hormonal imbalance is one of the primary causes of acne.

Alcohol and Stress in Relation to Acne

The use of alcohol has also been related to people who experience stress. Stress alone can increase the risk of skin problems.  Alcohol itself can increase the levels of stress in the body. When you add one risk factor to the other you have doubled your risk of increased stress and acne breakout.  Increased stress results in an imbalance of hormones which can again trigger an outbreak of acne.  People who are prone to stress should avoid the consumption of alcohol as it can increase the risk of acne and compound the stress already experienced.

The Effect of Alcohol on the Liver and Immune System Related to Acne

The liver functions in the body to rid it of toxins. Alcohol impairs the ability of the liver to function properly leading to the buildup of excess toxins in the body and an imbalance of hormones which can cause acne. The sugars present in alcohol can also affect the liver and its function again resulting in hormonal imbalance leading to acne.

Alcohol has further been linked to a weakening of the immune system.  When the immune system is weak it is not able to efficiently fight off bacteria.  Bacteria such as propionibacterium acne bacteria are free to colonize and grow in the pores of the skin and acne results.  The presence of alcohol is also known to aggravate the growth of Candida which is associated with causing acne to flourish.
