What do you do when your lips constantly feel dry? In most cases, you turn to your favorite lip balm for relief. What you may not realize is that you may be doing more harm than good, and additionally, you need to find out if you have a lip balm addiction.

Is the Addiction to Lip Balm Physical or Mental?
In most cases, the addiction to lip balm is more physical than mental. Physically, your lips become dry, and because the skin on your lips is addicted to the balm, they may even start to crack if you do not apply it.
However, this addiction could also be mental. Your lips may not be dry at all, but you feel that they are, and you reach for the lip balm. Most people will apply lip balm when going outdoors during the winter months, or a lip balm that has sunscreen in it when going outdoors during the summer months, but this is for protection, more than to feed an addiction. If you find that you constantly have lip balm in your hand, try putting it down and living without it for a few days, despite your lips becoming dry or even cracking, just to see how you deal with that from a mental aspect.
How to Deal with Dry, Cracked Lips without Lip Balm
There are many products that are available, which do not fall under the category of lip balm, which can be used to treat dry, cracked lips. You should definitely seek out these products to overcome the actual physical effect of doing without lip balm, but these treatments should be short term.
You should also start consuming more liquids. When you are well hydrated, your lips are less likely to dry out and start cracking, despite the quality of the air. During the time that you are using a short term remedy, do not apply anything else to your lips, including lipstick.
When to See a Doctor
If your lips are persistently dry or cracking without the use of lip balm, and over-the-counter remedies have not worked, you should visit your doctor. He or she can do simple blood tests to determine if there is a medical condition that is causing the lips to dry out and crack. You could actually have some type of bacterial infection that is causing this. You can ask a doctor or a dermatologist for a prescription of Desonide Cream.
