There remains much debate as to whether or not being homosexual or bisexual is a choice made consciously. Many people ask the question “Who would make the choice to be part of 10% of the population who risk being hated, despised, and ridiculed, risking violence and in some areas execution for that choice?”

Theories of the origins of Homosexuality
There are many theories of how homosexuality is determined. Some believe that it is a choice. Others believe that it is in the genetic makeup and determined before a person is even born. Still others believe that the environmental and emotional upbringing in childhood can bring about homosexuality. None of these theories have been proven.
Research was published from the American researcher Dean Hamer that seemed to offer proof that homosexual orientation was genetically transmitted to men on the X chromosome from their mother. This is not proof because in several follow up duplicate studies conducted by him and other the same results were not produced. George Ebers and George Rice of the University of Western Ontario also tested the same region of the X chromosome in an even larger sample of homosexual males and did not identify the same ‘marker’ that Hamer’s previous research had found.
Other theories include psychosocial development is accountable for homosexuality. They claim that a female dominant upbringing in the absence of a strong male role model can cause a child to develop homosexual tendencies. It is believed that a person’s sexual preference is influenced by their experiences and family environment. With this theory the question remains, why do siblings raised in the same home by the same parents or parent have different sexual orientation? The experiences with sex could be shaped by either unpleasant or pleasant encounters of the past.
Has Science proven People choose to be Homosexuals?
Science has not definitely proven that there is a genetic gene responsible for homosexuality, traits have been identified much the same as whether a person cannot choose to be right handed or left handed. But as of yet, no one particular gene can be pointed to and identified as the source.
Science has not yet identified the genetics that determine whether we are left handed or right handed. They have not yet identified why blue eyes are more common in Caucasians than in Asians or other races. It is just accepted that more people are right handed and Caucasians are more likely than Asians to have blue eyes because of clinical observations in all people all over the world. Clinical observation is part of science; genes do not need to be identified to determine we have no choice in some matters of our lives. Science has also not proven that people make the conscious choice to be homosexual.
Without scientific proof it is just speculation. But again, if someone had a choice to live the lifestyle of 90% of the population without the risks and difficult consequences for living a gay lifestyle, do you think they would choose the challenging and risky path?
Would people choose to be Homosexuals knowing the Risks Involved?
Life is hard. Living a gay lifestyle is harder. To consciously sit down and decide that you are going to be homosexual would involve knowing that you are putting yourself out there for ridicule, discrimination, hate and into a very non accepting society.
Most gay people are shocked upon realizing that they are sexually and emotionally attracted to the same sex. Some hide the feelings for the fear of rejection of family, friends and society. Many people become aware of their attraction to the same sex upon entering puberty, during their teenage years. During this time they may experiment with both same sex and opposite sex partners. Due to the difficulty associated with acknowledging their attraction to the same sex and ‘coming out’ may mean that they do not identify the fact that they are gay until much later in their lives.
Many people who have a strong attraction for the same sex continue relationships with opposite sex partners, often marrying and having children while trying to suppress the feelings they have. These people often never fully feel satisfied as the attraction to the same sex continues for them. It may not be apparent to them until after many years that the attraction towards the same sex is not transitional for them. Upon this realization they may choose to acknowledge the feelings and act on them ‘coming out’ and leading a homosexual lifestyle or try to hide them. The men who deny their feelings and attempt to live the ‘traditional lifestyle’ often have homosexual affairs or encounters to satisfy their attractions and then return home to their wives or girlfriends to continue the farce of being heterosexual.
Some people remain celibate and alone because they never find a partner of the opposite sex that they are strongly attracted to. These people may choose to be alone for other reasons but is there a possibility that perhaps they are looking for love in the wrong sex? Could it be that they never find the love of their life in the opposite sex because they are attracted to the same sex and the opposite sex is just not attractive to them? Very religious people who believe that God or the church might frown on same sex relationships may choose to be alone rather than engage in a homosexual relationship.
After taking a really strong hard look at the lengths some people go to in order to hide or deny the fact that they have homosexual feeling can we reasonably say that they made the choice to be homosexual?
