It should not come as a surprise that diabetics have their own food pyramid because of their special dietary needs. This food pyramid divides food into six major groups. Like the other pyramids, the base or biggest part of the pyramid and contains carbohydrates such as bread, grains, potatoes and other types of starch. Because starch needed for energy, between 6 to 11 servings is recommended. Due to different caloric needs, females tend to be at the lower end, while men usually consume a higher number of servings. The next level on the pyramid recommends 3-4 servings of vegetables and 2-4 servings of fruits per day. For meat and other protein sources, 4-6 servings are generally adequate with 2-3 servings for milk and other diary products. The Diabetic Food Pyramid tip comprises fats and sweets which should be used sparingly. Interestingly, this pyramid does allow for small portions of treats such as ice cream and cookies. However, these are not for everyday consumption but reserved for special treats.
